jeep 2.8 v6

I have been looking a jeep that has a 2.8 v6 in it its a 86 cherokee? What is the reputation for these engines?

I know the 4.0s are good and usually live to 200k plus miles but was unsure on the v6.

Pretty much junk, but if you want some 'cheap' power out of them, put on some Fiero splayed valve heads and some sort of EFI

The 2.8 is truly junk. Go with the buik motor or the 3.4 chevies is a direct bolt in. Not the 4.3 but the 3.4. It was the replacement for the 2.8 and is a very reliable motor. Motor mounts and bellhousing are supposed to be the same also. I had an 86 bastard child. It has a GM motor, trans and even the key switch is GM. From what I understand it was when AMC was at the end they were contracting components from GM before selling out to present day chrysler.

I know this post is late and all but i have a jeep with the 2.8 and i have to say it is a lot tougher than it though. I asked this same question got the same feed back but got it anyway and its pulled its own weight so far... 2 1/2 yrs.

The 2.8's oiling system sucks and will spin a bearing in a heartbeat.
