Jeep 4.0 cam problems

hey bud, unfortunately you're gonna have to pull off the oil pan and look at your oil pump. thats what it sits in and most likely it's bad oil pump. seen it happen before. as long as I've worked on them, haven't seen can problems but could be a first. i guess you already made sure that dis is sitting in there all the way? lined up with oil pump? i got spare motor if you start looking for one, let me know

Its a 91 and one person i asked they said the block was messed up he said it happens to alot of the 91 but just truin to get some other advice or wondering if anybody else had heard that

well yeah the block is definitely the culprit, pull the pan and check your oil pump, I think you would know immediately if its the cam or the oil pump and hope its the oil pump. good luck with it!

How is the block failed and causing this issue? How can you distinguish this? Curious...

Jeeps have had distributor gear issues for some time now. Happens frequently. Fixing them properly isn't hard.

The cam is either walking in the block or the oil pump is seizing up. Take out the distributor, use a screwdriver or small prybar to see if the cam has front to back play. If it does, the cam button and/or spring behind the front cover is worn. Also, if the cam is worn where the distributor rides, it will need a new cam and lifters.
Only way to tell if the oil pump is seizing is to remove it, disassemble it and look for signs of wear.
I have been into more 4.0's than most. Lemme know if I can help.

I agree, I was saying to test the oil pump first in bottom end because that would be easier to check than messing with cam and all that. i don't remember if the OP mentioned it but are the distributor gears totally gone or what?

Its my buddys motor its out of the jeep and im looking to buy it but dont wanna waste money if the blocks trash ill tear into it and see if i cant figure it out thanks if anybody has anything else they might know about it let me knpw

What else do ya want to know? See if the cam gear is worn (while the dizzy is out). Also see if there is excessive front to back play camshaft endplay. You can also turn the oil pump by hand with a flat head screwdriver to get an idea if it is seizing.
