I went and looked at a 1989 Jeep Cherokee today. It's lifted up, big tires blah blah etc etc but the guy said he hasn't ever driven it really far and he said that it doesn't have the stock coolant tank in it and that he carries a 2 liter bottle with him and every time he drives it he has to fill it up with water(has no thermostat in it). I drove it up and down the road a few times and it didn't overheat on me or anything. He said that if you drive it for a decent while or are out in the woods it will start spitting water out of the coolant tank. I checked the oil and didn't see any signs of water in the oil. Where could the water be going? Kinda scared to buy the Jeep with it like that. Any ideas?

'89 should have the closed cooling system with no radiator cap...did this have that, or had it been coverted to the newer system with a radiator cap? Sounds like the stock pressurized tank broke, he reomved it, now its jsut spitting coolant on the ground as it expands

It had the closed cooling system in it. It has some sort of tank in it that resembles the stock one but I'm guessing it's not the stock one. What would it take to fix it? Just buying a stock coolant jug/tank?

I have seen this before on vehicles with an overflow tank. If too much coolant is in it whn cold, it will fill up and overflow when it reaches operating temperature.
