Ive got a 2000 Jeep Cherokee with a tow package. I need to pick up a 1998 Cherokee with a blown motor about 30 minutes away. I was considering just getting a front wheel dolly to tow the other cherokee back. Driving from raleigh to chapel hill where i will pick up the other cherokee and then back to raleigh. Would i be able to make it safely? I hauled a 70s cherokee cheif back in the day about 15 minutes using the same method with no issues, but im sure my jeep didnt appreciate it much, haha.

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated!

Could you do it, yes. But, it would be the braking that would concern me. Cherokees don't stop well in stock form, double the weight and you have a very marginal situation.

If your going to do it I would carefully pick my route and time of day.

No buddies that a case of beer and gas money wouldn't convince to tow it with a proper rig?

The fact that you are asking the question on this forum tells me you already know the answer.

I wouldn't, pulling may not be a problem, but stopping on the other hand...

Well if there are no trailer brakes then don't. If you have functioning trailer brakes then yes. A tow dolly. No way.

just give yourself plenty of time to stop, ive towed a few cars and trucks with the 2000 cherokee i had a few years ago just be cautious

ALL, good suggestions! If you have to rent, a trailer shouldn't be much more than the dolly. If your not wired for electric brakes, look for surge brakes. And a friend tried to rent from U-Haul, & was refused! Told his PU weighed the same as the Van he wanted to tow. W H A T ????

my dad tried to rent a u-haul car trailer when he had his cherokee and they wouldnt let him because they said any vehicle is to much waight for one to tow

Towed alot of things... never that much with an XJ... Im sure you know someone with even a 1500 silverado or f150 that would be better suited for the job.

Flat towed a few vehicles outta the woods, towed a dead isuzu trooper about 5 miles with a chain because he shredded his alternator belt, did that at 4 am though and only to the autoparts store so when they opened he could get his parts and drive it home.

did some researching one time to save on tow bills.. 92 miata works, it weighs 2k#

I've towed a plymouth breeze (~3k#, for 150 miles, 55mph no faster, 3x longer stopping with good brakes), dodge neon(~2.5k#, fuel pressure regulator messed up, only did 35, bad brakes = not fun, 5x stop distance) with a 2 wheel dolly and an XJ. of course they were really 92 mazda miata's to Uhaul. slip I had said if its was under 3750#.. complete XJ weighs 3000-3500. also towed a late model grand prix v6 on a 16ft flat trailer about 35 miles(35 mph top speed up 8% grade (accelerator wouldn't open TB all the way tho, so it'd probably do 55)). acceleration isn't as much of an issue as stopping. better allow plenty of stopping distance if you tell them your pulling a miata. and with Uhaul you will only get a two wheel dolly, no 4 wheels.. the 4wh trailer weighs 2.5k# itself. their rule of thumb is max towing weight is 75% of tow vehicle.
