I know there are many different designs and brands out there. Are their any pros or cons between the different designs and brands? Is their an ideal thickness of steel?

Im trying to decide what bumper I want to get. Cheaper the better but I'm willing sacrifice extra money for quality because of safety and all that jazz.

I have had a JCR bumper on another XJ and it was beefy and I liked it. I currently have a L&L fab bumper (out of business) and it was built with 3/16 plate. It has been tweaked in a few places but nothing major. Of course I’m pretty rough on it.

The main thing is a good bumper that ties into the steering box and has good mounting points. If I was gonna buy one off the shelf, I’d probably go with a JCR because of quality, American made, and I like their sense of humor and marketing lol.

I like how they are America made and their sense of humor but not enough to spend close to a grand on just a bumper and to have it come with a finish on it. But I will make sure to get one that ties into my steering box bolts.

I honestly had no idea they were that much till I read your post and looked just now. That was not the case about 3 years ago. Of course, the one I had came on the Jeep when I bought it.

We could get some measurements off mine and probably build one even better for less than $400

Seriously buy a short circuit MIG or a tombstone stick welder and a dewalt angle grinder. Add some brackets from JCR and some steel and I’d bet your total investment would be cheaper than buying one shipped.

A mix of 1/8” and 3/16” would be plenty thick.

The one on my heep is from fishbone. I looked around for a while before I bought it, and couldn't be happier with it. The fit and finish is excellent, and was at the lower end of the price range for a xj bumper. Let me know if you would like to take a look at mine sometime......

What's the benefit of having the winch upright versus one angled down slightly?

I built one several years ago.. you can see it on @336wheeler xj. It has a receiver for a winch cradle, because I thought it more versatile to use a receiver/cradle and quick connects to the winch could move front to rear to the trailer. It's 2x6 1/4 wall with 1/4x6 frame rail mounts that catch a plurality of bolts on each side, including the steering box. Though one design tip would be to make the driver side mount long enough to tie into the track bar mount to prevent stress from being put on the sheet metal section between the box and the mount. (That xj cracked the frame rail a few times and I welded it up every time, twice I think, and it saw mostly asphalt.)

I had one from dirt bound off-road. They have a diy bumper to

For the money this is the best option, you bend it you weld it. My sons XJ has this.

Forgot to mention, it has the same type of tie in as JCR

Not sure what your budget is, but I'm sure my pricing should be competitive. Let me know what your looking for and I can send you a CAD drawing and pricing on a custom plate or tube bumper.

Thanks

I'm leaning towards getting the smittybilt mod bumper and the bull bar. I will probably buy the bull bar separate down the road.

Then also getting a smittybilt winch 9.5k. I really want to run synthetic but trying to keep this under 800.

I'm trying to decide if this setup is reliable.

I know I'm probably going to need a new steering box spacer.

Biggest thing with these premade bumpers is the shipping.

Right, but I found some with free shipping. I’ll have to find it.
That's one reason why the smittybilt looks real good on quadratec or amazon.

Thank you for all of the links. That goliath came close but was still going to be 150 more than smittybilt. I'm going to hold out till black Friday and cyber Monday and see what comes up.

Give Logans a call. I bought mine when they were sponsoring NAXJA winterfest and they had a special going on. They are a small family owned business IIRC. Also Ironman4x4 Fab just came out with a DIY TJ bumper and an XJ is supposed to follow soon. Might want to give Andy a call and ask.

FWIW I have installed a few of the smittybuilt F&R on tj and the weren’t bad but thin, bad coating quality and the bolt holes didn’t line up good cause it seemed the jig they were welded in didn’t have a good tolerance (seemed like the bumpers were bent.
