I am buying a CJ-10 off of this board. My plan for it is just general use, not a DD, but also not a trail rig either. I want it to haul stuff from time to time when a pick up is needed. Trips to the mountains to ride in the snow, and just want it for the novelty of it. After all, how often do you see one.
My question is basically to do with the engine. From what I gather it's a non turbo, SD-33 Nissan Engine. I know it's not a powerhouse engine, and that's fine. I am more wanting the reliability of the small diesel. Now for the part I don't know about.
What I know about a diesel engine is a very small list. I know they fire off of combustion, this particular one has a glow plug for each cylinder. I know to shut the off you kill the fuel. So, how difficult will it be to diagnose issues I may encounter. What temps should it run normally? What type oil is best? Will new diesel run OK in it? How difficult will it be to run grease in it?
Any other input appreciated.

Chip,

I think the SD-33 engine will be easily converted to grease. Some of the other grease monkies may know better than I. I used to have one of these vehicles and have tinkered with it a little. I'm sure anyone that knows this engine can work on it, but I've found that Western Carolina Forklift has had the best service for me when dealing with that engine. Nissan couldn't help, IH couldn't help, and Advance/Auto Zone was a joke. WCF has some good factory parts for a reasonable price, and fairly local to you.

Another great resource is JESCO in CA. They typically have a few of these sitting in the yard and can usually get all kinds of parts for them for a reasonable price (engine and/or body parts).

Let me know if you need any other help.

I'm jealous and want another one. Actually, the rear axle in my buggy came from the CJ10A I had so I still have a part of it.

Im jealous Chip! That CJ-10 is nasty, if I had the money and the time I would be all over it cause thats a steal! You gonna dress it up any or leave it as is?

First thing will be to get it running, then the bed attached, then maybe a paint job. Maybe a sterio and speakers and some insolation to drown out the noise.
As I said, it's gonna be a go get her kinda truck, play in the snow, go get pats ect. Not a trail rig. Just something to drive that's out of the ordinary

Man that is awsome Chip. I picked up the Commando he had and it is a good thing I was out of cash as I would have loved to had that CJ10 as well (like I need another vehicle :shaking:) That is a killer deal for sure and will be a sweet ride with the bed on it:beer:. Look forward to seeing it in the hood

with it being a tug truck....is it going to be able to handle a reasonable highway speed? just wondering. Sweet ride at a hell of a price..im trying damn hard to get the cash for the willys truck if it hangs around.

the tug was originally a 2wd but had a 208 locked in low range for the low gearing. everything else is the same. I don't remember what TC is in there now, but it should be good to go with normal driving if its taken out of low range.

also, the tugs typically came with a low geared rear axle of the dana 70 sort... the PO has changed the case and axles to get rid of that issue...

The SD-33 is a not too rare of an engine, and rather simple, so should work well for you Chip... As said, the lifts they are/were in are probably the best place for parts/info... ive seen info about them around on the web and some of the IH boards as well...

Oh yeha, if it doesnt end up working for ya, let me know... Ill probably take it off your hands
