Jeep CJ Air Vent question?

I just bought a jeep and noticed that the plastic box down inside the air vent on the hood has half of it cut out. It is causing alot of water to come inside the jeep and all over the electronics behind the dash. 2 part question:

1. Can I just patch that up or even rip out the whole heater box if I am not planning on rigging up the heat and air?

2. Is that a part that anyone has been able to replace at some point in their jeep?

I think I am planning on putting a Heater Craft Acu-Heat system in it and my main goal is to stop water from coming into the jeep.

I once cut a piece of plastic the same size as that vent hole and put it between the cover and the body. I used black plastic and you couldnt even see it. Of course once you install the cover, you should trim off the excess plastic from around it. This worked for me.

x2 It's a fresh air intake..... that's what the removable doors are for in my opinion.

From your description, I can't tell if your airbox is stock or has been cut up by the PO. There whould be a 1" hose at the bottom collecting water and dumping it back out thru the firewall.
You can rip it out or block it off. The only drawback is you won't have any windshield defrost. When I ran a top, there were a actually a few times I was glad I restored the HVAC system. Of course you need to make sure the AMC cardboard defroster duct hasnt deteriotated away :poop:
As pointed out above, you don't need a fresh air intake if you arent running a top, or even just door/windowless. But you are concerned about water getting in, so it sounds like you have some sort of top and doors.

I do not have a top on it right now....mainly concerned when I wash the jeep and in the future when it rains after I get a top....I am probably planning on installing a heater craft heater that comes with the defrost ducts. If I restored the HVAC system, I would need the whole box that is enclosed under the vent cover. It is the actual box that is cut out that would have had the 1'' piece to reroute the water. Does anyone know where I could get this piece if I do choose to go that route?

I think someone on here had one in the forsale section.

i HAD A 1976 CJ5 THAT WAS JUST LIKE THAT. THE ORIGINAL JEEPS HAD SHORT RADIOS MADE JUST FOR THE JEEPS. THE LONGER RADIOS WILL NOT FIT UNLESS THE PLASTIC VENT IS REMOVED. MORE THAN LIKELY, THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED. IF YOU LOOK UNDER YOUR DASH ON THE RIGHT SIDE YOU SHOULD SEE A TWO INCH HOL OR SO. THAT IS WHERE YOUR DRAIN HOSE ORIGINALL WENT RUNNING OUT THE FIREWALL UNDER THE HOOD NEAR THE MOTOR. YOU CAN TAKE THE COVER OFF THE HOOD AND FIBERGLASS THE INSIDE OR PLUG IT BY SOME OTHER MEANS OR YOU CAN RUN A HOSE OUT SO IT CAN DRAIN. yOU CAN ALSO CUT A PIECE OF THIN PLEXIGLASS THE SIZE OR THE SQUARE SCOOP SND SILICONE IT IN THAT WAY NO WATER CAN GET IN, BUT NO AIR WILL GET IN EITHER.
