Jeep CJ Clutch

I have a 77 Jeep CJ5 with a 304. I have removed the 3 speed and am going to install a T176. When I removed the 3 speed and could get to the clutch the pressure plate had lots of fingers where the release bearing rides.

My friend gave me a new clutch, pressure plate and the clutch release bearing kit that a purchased but didn't use. He had similar problems I had with the clutch not fitting. In the end he went to automatic instead so he didn't use the kit.

The problem is the clutch will not slide on the T176 shaft because the hole is too small. Same tooth count just too small.

My question is. can I use the new pressure plate and release bearing and just buy a new clutch? The new pressure plate only has 3 fingers where the release bearing rides.

Are they interchagable. I have read the T15 had a smaller diameter shaft so I am guessing that is what this kit was for but can I use the pressure plate and purchase a new clutch?

Thanks

I would think you could with no problems. Strange that the 3 speed and the 4 speed have a different shaft. The reason I say that is because I took a three speed out of my FSJ and replaced it with a T-18 4 speed, and it took the same clutch.
The splines on the tranny shaft doesn't touch the release bearing, it's just there to relaese the pressure on the clutch so you can change gears. So with that thinking, get another clutch and go with it.

The 3 speed I removed is the T150. It does have the same shaft as the T176. The clutch kit I have I believe is for the
T15, which I have read has a smaller output shaft.

Thanks for the help

The T150 (3-spd) and T18 (4-spd) were used in 76-79 CJ's, and are not a direct swap with transmissions used in 80-86 CJ transmissions (T176, T4, T5, SR4, SR5). As you found out, the input shaft and diameters are different.
I'm not sure if the pressure plate is interchangable, I was thinking they used a different overall diameter clutch disc, which might mean a different pressure plate.

Thanks.

So I would be further ahead getting a complete clutch kit (pressure plate, clutch, pilot bearing and release bearing) for a T176?

Generally speaking...without changing the flywheel, the pressure plates will be the same diamenter for any transmission that would be behind that motor. So the clutch would be the same diameter. So look up a clutch with that diameter with the correct shaft size and spline count!

I run a T176 behind a SBC! Nothing special. Bought the stuff at NAPA!
