I have a '91 Wrangler w/ the 4.0L. Recently I have been having problems with RPM's dropping extremely low to the point sometimes it cuts off when coming to a stop. Once I come to a complete stop, if it hadn't cut off, it idles fine and runs good getting up to speed afterward and just cruising.

It has 128K on the odometer but only 30k on the rebuilt block. I replaced all wires, distributor cap, spark plugs, etc before it got put back in the Jeep. The tranny is in neutral or the clutch is engaged because i'm down shifting so its not due to the engine being bogged down when this happens. Its quite puzzling to me. Has anybody else experienced this before or have any idea why its doing this? Appreciate the help.

If I am using engine braking to control my Jeep's speed offroad and am going very slow it will sometimes die/try and die when I clutch it to come to a stop. Mine is a '93 YJ, and I have some friends that have the same issue with a '98 and '99 Cherokee. I never have fixed it because gently bliping the throttle usually brings it back to normal idle. I suspect the Idle Air Controller(IAC) could be the culprit but haven't looked into it too much...

I have also heard that it could be the clutch hanging up on poorly lubricated splines and not fully releasing when you press the pedal causing the engine to begin to stall/stall...

I had this problem with my old truck it was a 97 ram. Mine was an auto tranny I and fixed all the stuff you have fixed and then some. I started to think it was the torque converter not disengaging and dragging the motor down. Before I figured out what my problem was my battery died one day so I replaced it. After replacing it I had no trouble for 6 months or so. Then it started back just as bad and always intermiten. It ended up being a short length of my positive cable that went from the battery to the power distribution block. It was only like 8" but it was so corroded that there was almost no current able to pass through it. It was not getting the computer enough voltage. I replaced that cable and was problem free.

I'm not sure this is your problem but I thought it might be somewhere to check. If your cables stay really corroded and the actual wire is starting to look black instead of copper Its a strong possibility. Hope this helps.
