I am looking at a 71 Jeep J4000 Truck, I have seen pics, the guy knows nothing about it, except it runs, and it has a big axle in the rear, he also says it has a 360, I am not familiar with the early J series trucks

so here is a few questions

This is a long wheelbase truck so the wheelbase should be 130 or so right?

In 71 did they use the AMC 360 in the J series trucks, or was it the oddball 350 stuff?

If they did use the 350 stuff, then the transmission would be a chevy version th400 correct?

What transfer case did they use?

He says it is a 5 lug, but says it is big, could it be a dana 60 rear?

What axle did they use in the front with a 60 rear?

It should be a AMC 360 engine... they did use Buick v8s in the trucks for a while... specs are here:

350 Buick V8, years: 68-71, 230hp, 350ft-lbs, 2bbl Rochester, Special Order only in '71
360 AMC V8, years: 71-72, 245hp, 365ft-lbs, 2bbl Motorcraft

More then likely it'll use a dana 20 transfer case

The rear axle could be either a d44, d60 FF or SF

The front will deff be a dana 44, unless its actually a M715

Should be 131" WB

Certainly could be an AMC 360 in 1971. But I am pretty sure that 71 was a crossover year, so some early trucks probably came off the line with the buick 350 as well.

Either way, it should be a TH400 with a dana 20 transfer case

It could have a dana 60-2 rear axle which is a pretty cool axle. Semi-floating with 1.5" 35 spline shafts.

Should have a closed knuckle dana 44 in front.

I'm willing to bet its got the D60 semi float rear axle.

However, didn't some of those trucks come with 1-piece AMC 20 rear axle??? It may be too early for the AMC axle...

X2 on what has been said, but I don't think there were any AMC 20's in 71 trucks.
And, for what it's worth. The oddball enine you refer to was a Buick 350. LOADs of grunt, and lot peppier than the 360 IMO.
