hello looking for some help on transfer case on a 2006 jeep commander. I have to code's that come and go. One is transfer case clutch slip, the other transfer case temp. out of range. My problem is I cant find any info on this transfer case and local shops just say Ill take it apart and see what we find. No one has worked on one. From what I can find on the internet it looks like there are 3 clutch's that lock on wheel slippage? They also look to be activated or attached to the electric motor on the transfer case. Is this something I can replace with out taking the transfer case apart? as for the temp. out of range I cant find any other wire's on the transfer case. I have changed the fluid and this did not help.Any help would be great as I do not want to take to Chrysler.

the transfer case needs to be taken apart. the temp code is probably being caused by the slippage, if it's got a temp code it's probably gotten hot enough that it needs to be completely disassembled and inspected.
as far as local shops telling you they will take it apart and see what they will find, what do you expect them to say? they don't have a magic wand to wave over it and see what's wrong from the outside.

I understand that that they don't have a magic wand. But I was looking for a shop with knowledge of this transfer case. Everyone I talked to didn't know anything about the clutch. I don't mind paying for quality work. But if the clutches are attached to the motor and I can replace the motor and save money this is what I want to do. The mechanical side of it does not bother me. The time and lack of information I can find on it is what I want to know. I figure it is going to be Chrysler only parts? According to all 3 shops. This is wife's daily driver and the money spent at a transmission shop verses it lying around in my shop to work on in my spare time is worth it if its not a easy fix. I just need some one with first hand knowledge of the clutch system.

When I was at the Jeep dealer I used to replace quite a few transfer case motors for the same issues you are describing. That is a simple job by simply removing and replacing the motor.
But, just like Lee said, my magic wand isn't calibrated for internet use. Good luck and let me know if you need any more info.

looks like I will be replacing the motor. Was on the commander forum and there are several new post. Some people had nice service tech's. Chrysler did a recall on the transmission control module program. To do this they clear all codes that are stored. Several people had the same ones as me and service tech advised that the motors would cause the codes. The temp sensor is built into the motor that why I could not find any other wiring.

If anyone has had one apart I would like to know about the clutchs just in case I have to open it up.

I have been into a few of those for bearing issues. You will find the motor is the culprit. 3 10mm bolts to remove it if I remember correctly.

transman 731 no problem man I get that all the time. What will it take to fix z?I will fix a-y that you have rigged on then z might not be a problem. I was just looking for some first hand experience . All 3 shops are good guys or I would not have when't to them. They just had no experience on the transfer case and no books or support to even find the clutch's.I don't like throwing parts at things but at $90 a hour at Chrysler I can buy a motor real fast. Last time it took 6 hours to reprogram the windows and tire sensors. Only charged for two but the window worked a week and now goes up and down at random times. Next time the tire sensors got out of whack discount tire took a hand held tool to all 4 tires and was done in a few minutes with no charge.Gotta make money just not all on one person.
