Problem: Jeep 92 XJ Stalls

Problem first strikes after crossing through a small pond. Had mud all over the jeep, crossed the perimeter of a small pond, tires go through maybe a foot of water. Water splashes all over the place. do two or three crosses and jeep runs fine. Pull over under shade to catch a break and turn off the jeep. Ten Minutes later try to crank it up and get the high rpm then super rough low idle. Rough enough that the revolutions are shaking the jeep. Try it again, engine barely runs and craps out in a split second. battled with this for thrity minutes untill i get it to run enough for me to take off from N to 1 in 4lo. twenty minute drive, get home, runs like a champ.

Last weekend. Hit a mudhole. A lot of water. The drivers side of the jeep gets barried to the wheel well. (4 inch lift) but the passenger side is high and clear from the water and muck. Here's the kicker. I got stuck in the mudhole because my engine stalled out as soon as the water splashed when i entered the hole. Checked the air filter, moist. The intake box had maybe a few drops of water total in it. Get it draged out since it wont start. Sputters out for thirty minutes. Rough idle and end up taking off out of N into 1st in 4lo again. Drive it for ten minutes, continued normal wheeling.

Whats Going On?

I've checked jeepforums.com and got a few ideas. Either my intake is sucking up a lot of water, distributor is getting wet, alternator is getting wet, ignition coil is wet, or ignition wires and caps need to be checked.

I never really do mud but i dont want to be afraid of sputtering out in a creek crossing, ya know?

Any suggestions besides stay out of mud or get higher clearance?

All your help is much appreciated:bounce2:

Had a similar problem, was my distributor, sealed it up, no more issues.

Yep, it was originally a temporary fix, but seems to be holding.

If it is getting in the distributor, spray/wipe the inside of the cap with WD40 (Water Displacement formula 40). Should get you fired right back up.

You still running the stock intake? The big box with the horn type funnel on it?

Sounds like your getting water in the intake, Once it burns off its fine, even a few drops can cause it to run ruff. Back in my mud hole splashing days my TJ did this all the time, I took a rubber flex hose and taped it to the funnel of the intake and ran it up high to see if thats what its was and it fixed the issue, Now I just try not to splash in the water.

Like the other guys stated its one of two things, Water in the intake or Water on the disturber.

I am betting its sucking water into the intake and causing the issue.
