Are CJ and YJ steering boxes interchangable? I know that they mount up different, but are the pitman arm and steering shaft the same? A YJ rebuilt unit is $30 less than a CJ, and I have to redo my broken mount anyway. Just curious as to if anyone knows. I guess I will get both if they are in stock and see.

I think the output shaft is the same for power steering CJ and YJ boxes. I tried a YJ pitman arm on my CJ, the YJ pitman arm fit fine on the shaft, but the key oriented it wrong, so I moved on to plan B.
I know nothing about the input side.

thats correct the input shaft is different for cj and yj, if you want it to bolt right on get one for a cj. the output for pitman is the same

Thanks guys, gonna pick up a CJ unit this afternoon.

Yj Box

They mount the same.

The lines may be different. 37deg flare v. o-ring whatever it's called. I think if you have an 80 and up CJ it might be the same fitting. NO big deal, just get the adapter inserts from here if necessary

The YJ arm is basically the same except it has a little drop. Works out nicely on a CJ with a 2.5" lift.

You could get a YJ steering shaft, and cut and weld together with the CJ shaft.
or
You could find a nice tilt Yj column and shaft. Swap in the YJ steering column.

EDIT: I actually wouldn't consider the YJ box an upgrade. Might want to look into a J20 box.
