Any one know if a cherokee xj or comanche 1994/1995 column will direct swap into a YJ of the same year? I know there were some things in these years that are the same and some things in the same model and year- like 1995 yj's- that are different depending on the month built. Swapping to an auto and would really like to have the shifter on the column. Thanks

I had a 95 XJ and it used a Chrysler mechanical airbag column. I think the YJ always used the GM steering column. The older XJs without airbags used the GM column and should bolt up to a YJ. I'm pretty sure I used a YJ column in on of my XJs. The footprint on the firewall is different between the 2 (Chrylser and GM columsn in XJs), in addition to the wiring, so swapping between the GM/Chrysler column will be very difficult.

Now what are you trying to do? I don't think the XJ ever had column shift, not sure about the MJ or YJ though.

Thanks for the reply Tony, this is like a lot of builds-started off wanting to swap from a I-4 standard to an I-6 auto- has now become a soa with dana 44's and a cummins 4bt with auto. I have a b&m floor shifter for the auto but would really like to have the tranny shifter in the column. Have I said that I am a cheap s.o.b.? hate the idea of buying a tilt/auto column but would happily swap my b&m for one.

I put a XJ column in my YJ a few years ago. Direct bolt in except on the XJ column, you'll have to cut off the firewall mounting plate, since the YJ didn't have one. I know you're thinking "What difference will it make if I don't?". If you don't cut it off, it won't reach into the engine compartment far enough and you also won't be able to bolt it up to the dash.

Thanks Ray, still tryin to decide if this is the route I want to go, with a 4bt and a th350 I'm gonna have to manual shift, kinda awkward on the column
