I'm wanting to change my muffler on my TJ 4.0 and put a 3 inch pipe to the back, anyone out there done anything like this? and what does it sound like, good or bad
You can do it, but the 4.0 is not going to move enough air to "need" 3" out the back. If you are doing it for looks, go for it. If you are looking for better performance, look elsewhere.
Not meaning to Hijack your post but I was thinking about putting a Flowmaster on mine and was wondering how loud the 40 was inside the jeep. I want to have the rumble but I dont want to kill my hearing at the same time.

I have a 4.0 w/ banks headers & exhaust. I had a gibson before but it rusted out then I went with the banks cause I already had the headers. It is 2.5" stainless and I like the way it sounds
I ran a dynomax muffler straight out of the cat, and the best day ever was when I put the stock exhaust back on. Definite increase in torque, smoothness, and hearing.
On my 4.0 I bought the gibson cat back for like $170 and definately like it.....I believe if you go more than 2 or 2.5 in without enough power to need it, you will actually kill performance (did that on my old Civic, just cuase it looked cool!)
