I'm wondering does the 4th digit (GVWR) mean that it could have Dana44 axles?
How else could you tell possibly from the VIN except for crawling under it and checking the shape?
Thoughts?

You can contact Jeep and get a build sheet emailed to you for free that will list all of the options your Jeep had from the factory

Also, what trim level is it? Unless its a sport, sahara, or rubicon it won't have the option of a rear 44 from the factory. The front will always be a 30 unless its a rubi.

I thought that there were some non-rubicon jeeps that had 44's in the rear (at least in the rear) for a "towing package".

I know the Rubi's have front/rear 44's unless my brain aint kickin today....

Could the 4th digit simply mean different springs and/or shocks?

Yes, some non-rubicon jeeps have 44's ion the rear. See my previous post. The Dana 44 rear was an option on Sahara and Sport trim levels, but not on X or SE trim levels. If yours isnt a Sport or Sahara, there's no chance of it having a 44 from the factory. (Unless of course it is a Rubicon, but you know that). I'm not sure what the GVWR relates to though

I think that 4th digit might parallel with/without hardtop, which could drive a different shock/spring package. That would be independent of rear axle being a 35 or 44.

Sport models came with a D35 rear, at least mine did.

Basically all jeeps with the 30" tire and wheel package had a D44 rear. They were 30" Wrangler GSA's I believe, and the wheels were always the 5 spoke Canyon's if I remember right. It was 10 years ago when I was looking though.

And as stated, that was only on the Sport and Sahara packages before the Rubicon came out.

OK gotcha.
My bro is looking - I appreciate the help.

the problem with looking at tires/rims is just about everyone has changed the rims on their jeep. A stock jeep for sale is tough to find. IMO

Thanks fellas.
