Well guys, long story short, I'm pretty sure I broke my transmission this weekend. I'm fairly confident that the input shaft broke. I have a 2000 wrangler with the 4 cylinder and AX5. I know that the AX5 came in wranglers for quite a while. Were there any changes made throughout the years? If so what year Jeeps can I use the tranny out of? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Chad

You can use the tranny out of any 95 up wrangler with the 4 banger, to keep it simple. Pre 95 year wranglers have an internal slave cylinder very different than yours.... Is torque getting through the tranny to the tcase in any gear? dont just jump to thinking it is input shaft w/o taking it apart, could be output shaft, input of tcase, a long list of things it could be....need to pull it apart before buying any transmissions

like the guy said, you need to diagnose a little better before you condemn something. (i just went through this with my buddy's tj, long story) i live in wilmington. send me a message if you want me to come by and give you a second opinion.

I would also look at it for a better idea at what your getting into to. I also have ax5 input shafts laying around that i could install for you

If you JUST broke the input shaft it would be a fairly easy fix, but thats only if the rest of the trans didn't get messed up by it

It could also be transfer case, or clutch, or output shaft

Give me a call

No worries guys. I'm not going to buy anything until I get it apart. The input shaft is merely a guess. I know it could be a multitude of things. I work at a shop myself, so I'm pretty competent with what I'm doing. However, I appreciate all of the offers for help. I should be able to get the tranny out tonight or tomorrow after hours, then I'll know for sure what the problem is. I'm pretty certain it's tranny related, but I'm not sure exactly what it is yet. Mac, that's exactly the info that I was searching for. Thank you.

I haven't looked at it too closely yet, my main concern was getting it back to wilmington. I have no power to the driveshaft in any gear, or any range through the transfer case. The more I think about it, the more confused I am about what it could be. I lost fifth gear while cruising down the highway. When this happened, it sounded like it just popped out of gear (which it did) so I went to put it back in gear it felt as if fifth was nonexistent. I then put it in Fourth gear and continued down the highway for about 3 miles with no problem. My girlfriend and I thought we smelled gear oil burning on the exhaust, so I opted to pull over at the next exit. When I did this I took it out of fourth to downshift to third, and realized third was gone, same with second and first. The Jeep would do nothing but rev through as if there were no clutch there. I pulled over to the side of the road and looked a little deeper. I can now feel every gear engage in the transmission, including fifth. I went through every gear in the tranny, including reverse, attempting to see if it would do anything. I got nothing. I then went through every range in the transfer case. Again, nothing. I looked over the tranny, there are no holes in it anywhere. I believe the gear oil I smelled was from the leaking pinion seal on the rear axle. There were no noises before it went out. It felt and sounded great. I really can't make any sense of this. This is by far the strangest thing that has happened to me. Hopefully I'll know more tonight. Unfortunately I have to write a paper tonight too, so I may have to put this off until tomorrow. Any ideas feel free to throw them out there.

I feel your pain man. I have a 2000 TJ and have had tanny problems for a while. No slipping, but when the clutch isnt engaged there is a bad rattle that goes along with the RPMs. I know nothing about trannys so i took it to the transmission shop which of course, they wanted to rebuild it. Describing the problems on the forums everyone thought it was the input bearing. I took it this weekend to get all the fluids changed out and a well needed alignment. When they took it on the test drive it crapped out on them. Now i cannot get it to go into gear but it will start. Ive looked all over to throw a used tranny in it but i cant find one. This is becoming a mess and i just want to drive my vehicle. Anyone know a trustworthy, not going to gouge my pockets tranny specialist in the Charlotte, Rock Hill area please send him my way!

Well guys, I only got to look at the Jeep for a few minutes tonight. I jacked up the rear axle so that the tires were off the ground. I then attempted to put the Jeep in gear without pushing in the clutch. It went into all gears except fourth with no clutch. I then pushed in the clutch and put the Jeep in fourth. I still have fourth gear, and only fourth gear. So, input/output shafts are good. It has to be internal. Any guesses.

I've been into 3 ax-5's. It sounds to me like you lost a snap ring on one of the countershafts allowing it to slip out of position. I wouldn't run it anymore for risk of messing it up good if you haven't already. The clutch concerns go with the bellhousing not the tranny so you can actually use any year AX-5 with YOUR bellhousing but I would go with the latest one you can find.

so it will pull in fourth. i had a transmission do this to me before. if fourth will pull the gear on your input shaft could be done or you have a broken countershaft. if an ax-5 is like most transmissions, fourth gear is direct so the shift collar merely locks your main shaft and input shaft together. in fourth the countershaft is turning but no torque is traveling through it. if it were a transfer case or a main shaft(output shaft) in wouldn't pull in any gear. pull the transmission, pull the input shaft/main input bearing cover and your problem will be right there. i promise.
