It's been about a week since I cranked the xj, so tonight I went to crank it and click click click...click click click. The battery (yellow top) is about 3 weeks old, I bought it the week I bought the jeep. It's a 5 speed, 4.0, 98.

It was already nearly dark so I haven't had a chance to check anything. Need some input on where to start tomorrow. :(

Good one Chip!!

With recent Optima comments I have read, I would say that the battery has lost charge. In my experience, Optima batteries do not like a fast charge, but a slower extend charge. I am guessing it's because of the gel cell spiral construction.

My other recommendations would be to check and make sure there is not corrosion at the connections.

Once you have it charged back, I would also check for any drains from the battery. An old timers trick(and I qualify) is to loosen the connection, and take the cable off, barely touch it to the battery (with everything off) and see if you have an arc(spark) if you do, then you have something that is drawing power from the battery while it's sitting. Unless you have a meter that measures amps, then start disconnecting things to see what is drawing power. Radio's, lights, alternators, are good places to start looking.

Take off and clean terminals while you are checking/charging battery...if they get corroded, you will have same symptoms as a dead battery...
hard to imagine ANY new battery dead in 3 weeks time...unless you left something on...ie lights or other drain..
dern I just finished reading what Chip (Upnover) wrote....so I just repeated what he said...but He's much older and Wiser than me...and a Grandfather...so always listen to your Elders

:D

get a different battery..i have gone through many optima batteries...and the only reason i kept using them was they were free to me.. (was a dealer)

but now when the red top i have dies i will go with something else...its on life support now

i have to hook up a charger to it when i don't drive the truck all the time...
