Jeep Wrangler Questions

OK
Wranglers have a back seat don't they?
a small bench or something?

I should stay away fro the carburated ones from the late 80s and early 90s too shouldn't I?

Carbed vehicles can do fine. Ever wonder what everyone drove between the years of 1900 and 1985?

As for the 4 cyl, it doesn't get any better mileage, but is a great motor.

As for towing the boat with a CJ/YJ/TJ, I wouldn't.

Why not look for an XJ?

I would ask what kind of boat...
Each type of boat weighs differently.

This 19 foot Skiff only clocks in at 1100lbs. Easy for a Wrangler.

Though the short wheelbase of one may make it un-nerving to pull. I personally have not pulled a boat with mine. Though I did pull a Ford F-150 with a car trailer and a Mustang on it, up a hill and into a parking lot of a gas station. He had blown a seal or something and was in the middle of Horner Blvd. Our 17year old son was with me when I pulled the truck, trailer, and car. :D

Not saying the 4 cyl isnt bad, I love mine. 155k+ and its still running stronger than a few motors ive heard out there..

Its supposedly got lower gears stock than the 6, so from what I hear, 4wheel low is actually a little more "crawlerish" than the 6..

Highway wise, the 4 will get you to maybe 60 miles an hour, going down hill....ive had mine to 70 with the 32's on it and it wasnt what I'd want to run for an extended period.

XJ would be good for towing though, and it seems like you could get a better one for the same price as a ratty TJ/YJ/CJ...

Carbed vehicles are good, until you get at a pretty high angle (going up obstacles...etc). then they have a tendency to stall. But on the upside, you dont have to deal with all that Fuel Injection garbage that you do on newer engines, so its a bit easier to work on them...

thanks for the input.
would a 4 liter Wrangler pull with no problem?
I guess I still have in my head to get something to have fun in as a stand alone, and to pull with.

I know I would have fun with an XJ again...just the topless appeal of a Wrangler...
Maybe I should go economical and get a 4cyl pickup...
the 2000 Frontier has a max towing capacity of 3500lbs and gets reasonable gas mileage...

I've pulled a 31 fountain down the road with a 95 2.5L YJ.... I wouldnt use it as my tow rig, but it has the power to pull.. It just doesnt have the braking system or the stability of a longer wheelbase vehicle.....

If you find yourself at a bad ramp trying to pull the boat up could be a chore. Mostly depends on the weight of the boat, that wrangler is only rated for 2000lbs so if your boat is lower then that, have at it. just don't expect to beable to hit the interestate with it..... A 6cyl will do better with the same mileage, but then again i wouldnt go down the interestate with it....

give us some more info on the boat.. if its light and won't push the jeep around TOO bad then you might could pull it off...

If you want to go topless why not find a 6cyl fullsize bronco? They are powerful and have decent gasmileage for what they are, and you can remove the top.

My boat is a fiberglass 17' Renken Open bow with a Merc 120 I/O on a galvanized trailer.
I guess I could go to the gas station on Rock Barn Road and actually weigh it.

I wouldn't think it was that heavy. I can push it out of my basement way easier that I can my Mustang...or one of our cars..

no, its a renken.. Its too heavy man. skip the wrangler idea

and with me saying that... it may be under 2K but its too much boat to be safe with the wrangler...

Consider that bronco idea... May not be a bad solution to your needs.

for the boat you mentioned in the other thread, if you had the loot, an unlimited or a scrambler would work.
The longer wheel base would keep you safe. I think that would be to much boat for safety in an emergency situation. (Aka your back end would scoot right around your front end) with a normal length wrangler.

why dont you just use the ford you are trying to trade everyone with>

Wife and 2 kids won't fit in a regular cab F150.
That would be the main reason...so I either find something that the 4 of us fit in or something good on gas so taking 2 cars doesn't break the bank in fueling both and the boat.

A Jeep is not the answer.
I am not saying that to bash Jeeps, but when your tow rig is shorter and lighter than your load bad things happen.

I have a tj, 4.0 5-speed, and have towed both a 14ft McKee Craft and a larger pop-up camper. Needless to say, it was not a fun experience. The jeep WILL NOT STOP SAFELY if you have to hit the brakes hard. It sounds like you have looked at the jeep already and it has a good price... I personally would not put a loaded 4 cyl jeep with a boat behind it on the highway (especially with kids); you wouldn't have the brakes or the suspension. There are better options...keep looking around and drive more 4x4's:driver:
