My xj has gotten to where it will cut off if it takes a hard hit or or hard bumps and won't crank back up for a few minutes when it happens it's getting fuel just turns over won't crank like no spark I have no idea what's causing it once it sits a minute it will crank rite up the other problem I'm having is the aw4 iit won't pull for a few seconds in any gear till it's reved up a little bit or if it's on a steep hill it will quite pulling it's like it goes into neutral and just rolls

I had a problem like that with one of my AW4s. I unplugged the TCU, did some diagnostics on the solenoids, couldnt find anything wrong. Eventually swapped out the entire tranny.

I have a. Aw4 tranny I can hook you up with

For the cutting out, test the crank position sensor. They sometimes act funny when warm, then return to normal once cooled down, so test it both warm and cold.

For the tranny, what is the condition of the fluid?

sounds like the aw4 is low on fluid

Its good on fluid it was only doing it when on steep hills or rocks but this past weekend it started doing it alot even on flat ground it acts like it runs out of fluid and comes out of gear till I rev it up and hold it a little bit then you can feel it grab like putting it in gear

sounds like time for a rebuild

i hate to say it but when my XJ started that it locked up on me on my way home from work... be careful brother... mine luckily did it on a straight part of the road and i was able to bring it to a stop safely... i had to change my shorts... if it happened a mile further i would have been off in the trees in a swamp.

It definitely sounds like the crank position sensor is failing, and you can only validate it is bad when the engine will not start. They are relatively easy to change, and inexpensive.

I had a 94 XJ that would randomly cutoff, like traveling down the freeway at 70, and the crank sensor only tested bad one night when it would not start after work. Changing the sensor takes about 30 minutes, but requires patience and good dexterity.
