JEEP YJ PROBLEM

so me and a buddy put a transfer case in his yj lastnight because the one in it had locked up, the tcase we used was the 231j and was working when we pulled it from the previous jeep. we hooked everything up and bolted it in, we crank it up and put it in gear and it goes no where. it sounds like the tcase and trans go into gear but still acts like its in neutral, has anyone had this problem? or is there any tips someone can give me?

thanks

Need more info. 4 cylinder? Manual tranny? year? Either way, it sounds like a linkage problem to me.

I have engine, trans and t/c for sale of needed. All working

Disconnect the linkage from the transfer case and turn the range selector by hand all the way one way or the other. There will be 4 detent positions. All the way one way will be 2wd and all the way the other will be 4 lo. With it in either you should be able to move the Jeep. If it does not move then either the tranny isn't feeding power to it or the TC has had an issue. If you killed the previous 231 you may have damaged the AX5 int he process as its not a very strong tranny.

And don't forget, the 231J behind the 4 cylinder AX-5 is 21 spline, while the one behind the 6 cylinder AX-15 is a 23 spline.

did the transfercase come out of a wrangler too? if it came out of a cherokee then the selector piece is formed differently. to check the year of the transfercase just look on the tag and youll see it i think on the second row

thanks for the help everyone! we figured it out the spline was bigger so we switched it all out and we have if fixed, headed to URE friday. hope to see some of you guys there:rockon:
