Local guy and I were shooting the shit tonight. He told me he had 88k in his jeep.
I laughed but he was dead serious.

Listed out these parts and claimed jeep cost 45 new.
Is this 43k worth of parts and labor?

I dont know JKs but I'm blown away... Guy doesn't even drive on dirt roads.

"I have teraflex elite long arm... hi steer kit, custom drive shafts, 4.56 gears, g2 pro axles with dynatrac big brake kit, aftermarket fuel tank, fox upgraded shocks, custom tie rod and draglink setup, dynatrac ball joints and all joints upgraded, trail dash programmer, intake, Gobi rack with accessories, two sets of rigid light bars, smitty bumpers, tire carrier, rocker guards, winch, upgraded head unit, 5 20x12 wheels wrapped in Toyo mts 40s, steering assist, flat fenders powder coated, dv8 inner fenders, tons of other lil shit ... we sat down and itemized a few months ago and with labor of install it was in the 80s... look at rubi truck, they selling for 75-90 with jeeps not even close to mine"

Good friend of mine works for Rebel off-road. He was telling me last night they do about 10, $100k builds a month. People dump stupid money in their JKs.

Even if I did... I might have bought the rubi and then built a buggy with stickies and oris for what he spent on "upgrades"

Cali is a gold mine for off-road shops, sad part is so many ppl get taken advantage out there.

Yeah. There was a guy on rockcrawler classified the other day posting about having 20k in receipts for an old xj with a mild lift... From a shop called predator off-road... Fucking sexual predators... They raped the poor guy.

Holy shit. Right now I've got $23500 in purchase price, and maybe $2500 in tires, wheels, steering, flat belly, springs, trackbar and misc. I lucked out and bought one some doctor in Raleigh had outfitted with mopar accessories bumpers and the warn 9500ti on it. Sold the bumpers and sliders for $700 to pay for a springs, track bar, and some cheap 12" travel shocks. Buying a welder has been my best mod yet.

I'm over here panicking about body damage on a yj crawler I have a fraction of the costs in lol.

but you do the work yourself.
i could see that much money spent on them if the shop is charging 50-80 an hour to bolt the stuff on.

When you do none of the work yourself, it can be really easy to rack up a huge bill on off road upgrades. Hell, even if you do it all yourself and start with an older vehicle you can still rack up a bill much higher than what you paid for the vehicle.

I thought I spent a lot on my rigs. If I was going to spend that kinda coin, Id go buy/build a house with a nice shop. Now I don't feel soo bad about spending a couple benjamins yesterday for parts.

Ditto... I spent $485 yesterday between weld on beadlocks, hardware, and a pair of 5 points. Feel like I got a pretty damn good deal lol.

My '87 k5 is a good example of that, I've easily dumped a few thousand in it, and still have a few thousand to go before it's like I want it to be.

Clearancing like a boss.

That's a TJ tank in there. Normally the fuel tank is hanging down 3" below the frame rail on the passenger side. It's a rock magnet there, and I wish I had my factory skid plate still to show the dents in it.

Was just explaining this to a guy I work with, went to a homeowners house that he just put his jku on 37's with fox shocks and real aluminum beadlocks, I'm guessing he has 80k in it with stock axles he had geared. Told him he should have just bought custom d60's from somewhere.

I used to frequent JKowners.com... it's supposed to be the pirate version of JK forums. I realized very early on, most have no clue what it takes to build a rig yourself, most might buy all their parts and bolt it on, few decent write ups like the DIY hydro assist, and really the rich guys get butthurt over the really hardcore tech threads. Almost everyone there is a brand loyalist and will defend their brand lift kit or whatever till they are blue in the face with no knowledge or experience of other brands. I've ran into people on other forums from there and they carry that same attitude of if it's not on a forum, you can't make it work. I've found it entertaining and just realize I don't fit in with the JK crowd at all.

Below is a screenshot of a discussion someone had up there and I'm still blown away at the money some of them throw at their rigs, and still think it's a hell of a deal.

"if I get a 72" wide axle it'll be wider than stock and it's not good"... anything over 37s on a JK and you need to either stretch the front, limit steering stops, or notch the frame to clear the tires at full lock unless you do go wider. I'd say 85-90% on them have yet to grasp this concept. And it still amazes me, I caught hell on a JK forum for saying the Rock Krawler progressive springs rode harsh and were ridiculously short free length by the bandwagon Rock Krawler fans who most never did more than a fire road. When I developed my steering setup, RHD knuckle, inverted T steering setup with the tie rod in the draglink hole, I was told it was stupid and I should have just bought Reid knuckles, and that it would never work. I've got around 12k miles on that setup, but it could have better Ackerman for parking lot maneuvers.

Explaining to them the balance of up and down travel instead of "omg I'm LCOG build bc I'm running stock springs, 3" bump stops and 40s with 1" of up travel". Or how just because you put big ass tires with no lift, doesn't mean you're not gonna turtle the hell out of it because that stupid fuel tank. My personal favorite is the sector shaft brace and why it isn't needed when you've got hydro assist ram, which wheeling a JK on bigger than 35s ram assist is definitely needed with a locked front end.

I once got in an rather heated discussion with someone because he didn't believe my belly height measurement (20 1/2"-21" depending on how much fuel is in it) even after posting a picture of it with a tape measure, because he had such and such lift and 40s. And people backed him up because the whole flat belly/TJ tank swap had only been done a handful of times, and I didn't have poison spyder this or that. It really showed me how many people get butthurt when you figure out a way to get better results cheaper when they have thousands more in their rigs.

However I do love the fact the JK platform has brought so many new people to wheeling and that's great for keeping land open, a positive image to the sport, and better aftermarket parts. I do feel like forums have tainted the wheeling life style when it comes to the JK crowd. Like it's almost a social status, and some of the owners are some of the biggest douche bags I've ever encountered. It's almost like you have to spend this amount of money to fit in a lot of times. And I've seen shops absolutely rape JK owners at shops selling them absolute bullshit.

No it isn't, because they take 50 jeeps on "trails" (public dirt roads), have no respect for neighboring land owners, piss everybody off, and get trails closed...
