UNEMPLOYMENT & other hocus pocus

COSTELLO: I want to talk about the unemployment rate in America.

ABBOTT: Good Subject. Terrible Times. It's 9%.

COSTELLO: That many people are out of work?

ABBOTT: No, that's 16%.

COSTELLO: You just said 9%.

ABBOTT: 9% Unemployed.

COSTELLO: Right 9% out of work.

ABBOTT: No, that's 16%.

COSTELLO: Okay, so it's 16% unemployed.

ABBOTT: No, that's 9%...

COSTELLO: WAIT A MINUTE. Is it 9% or 16%?

ABBOTT: 9% are unemployed. 16% are out of work.

COSTELLO: IF you are out of work you are unemployed.

ABBOTT: No, you can't count the "Out of Work" as the unemployed. You have to look for work to be unemployed.

COSTELLO: BUT THEY ARE OUT OF WORK!!!

ABBOTT: No, you miss my point.

COSTELLO: What point?

ABBOTT: Someone who doesn't look for work, can't be counted with those who look for work. It wouldn't be fair.

COSTELLO: To who?

ABBOTT: The unemployed.

COSTELLO: But they are ALL out of work.

ABBOTT: No, the unemployed are actively looking for work... Those who are out of work stopped looking. They gave up. And, if you give up, you are no longer in the ranks of the unemployed.

COSTELLO: So if you're off the unemployment roles, that would count as less unemployment?

ABBOTT: Unemployment would go down. Absolutely!

COSTELLO: The unemployment just goes down because you don't look for work?

ABBOTT: Absolutely it goes down. That's how you get to 9%. Otherwise, it would be 16%. You don't want to read about 16% unemployment do ya?

COSTELLO: That would be frightening.

ABBOTT: Absolutely.

COSTELLO: Wait, I got a question for you. That means they're two ways to bring down the unemployment number?

ABBOTT: Two ways is correct.

COSTELLO: Unemployment can go down if someone gets a job?

ABBOTT: Correct.

COSTELLO: And unemployment can also go down if you stop looking for a job?

ABBOTT: Bingo.

COSTELLO: So there are two ways to bring unemployment down, and the easier of the two is to just stop looking for work.

ABBOTT: Now you're thinking like an economist.

COSTELLO: I don't even know what the hell I just said!
And now you know why Obama's unemployment figures are improving!

:flipoff2:

I've heard too many people say they don't want a job. They earned their unemployment and will wait until the last day possible to get a job.

This problem could be fixed by making unemployed do 20 hours of gov't work such as litter pick up each week. Then they would be more movitated to get a job.

i agree, same goes for welfare as well. go clean some public bathrooms, pick up some trash, go work at the landfill. 40 hours a week.

Also remember when they calculate inflation, energy and food prices ARE NOT included. :shaking:

I was let go from my job a year and a half ago. Prior to me losing my job, my wife was staying at home with the kids and working about 10 hours a week PRN as an Occupational Therapist. We decided that I would stay home with the kids and she would go back to work to make up the lost income. I have been collecting Unemployment the entire time and looking for employment as directed. I have a well documented listing of all of the jobs I've applied for. I am only required to apply for two a week, but typically, I send off upwards of a dozen resumes a week. In the entire time I've been unemployed, I've had three call backs and 2 of them were for straight commission sales jobs. I have a degree in Advertising from Michigan State University and have been employed steadily in mostly the technology field and sales positions ever since graduation.

Now honestly, I'm not willing to just take "any" job. It doesn't make sense for me to accept a job for $10 and hour and then turn around and spend half to 3/4 of that pay to put the kids in daycare. If the right job happens to come along - of course I'll snap it up, but it would have to meet a high enough pay to allow my wife to go back to working minimal hours and stay at home with the kids. To us, it just doesn't make sense for us both to work to pay for someone else to take care of our kids when we are fully capable of doing so.

same thing happened to my dad... my dad was head of the engineering department at his last job...they went under and he went over 1.5 years without a job, he quickly found out that he will probably never find a job that payed as well as his last and had to accept something with lower standards.....

Kids is a hard subject to touch on, but maybe one of you should work days and the other work nights, so you don't have to pay for day care and both still be able to work. and in the mean time, keep applying for better jobs.

I worked at the ESC for a few years and it is proven that most people on unemployment find employment within the last 3 weeks of their benefits! Furthermore, the unemployment rate IS only measured by those drawing unemployment, not all people out of work. People are quickly starting to run out of benefits and this is making Obama look like he is turning things around. Also, unemployment fraud is insane and its done by all types of people. Race car team members seem to be the worst and I hate to say that but its true. A lot of them are 1099s under random company names and still draw $506 a week unemployment without reporting there earnings. Right before I left, I sent in paperwork on a race team owner (yes you heard me right) who had almost $40k dollars of unreported earnings in less than 2 quarters. I had to get out of there. Everyday I left pissed off having people set at my desk and openly admit fraud...most still haven't been punished. The ESC is years behind. If they would push to to charge these people, then the state would have more funds being paid back over time thus allowing for more job positions. However, they are now cutting positions, which will in turn impact the amount of manpower the state has to investigate fraud.

It doesn't make sense for me to accept a job for $10 and hour

Full stop. Here's the thing nobody wants to talk about.

Kids or not... if you were working a good job, making 40-50k/yr, unemployment pays about $500/wk. You're actually losing money if you go out and accept "any" job. You need something making about $15/hr just to break even. And that's just on a cash basis, not accounting for your lost time. You're better off sitting at home collecting checks (until they run out) with maybe picking up some side work here and there.

no wonder people like to stay on unemployment..... i have a job (and a degree from auburn) and i dont even make $500 a week. looks like it's time to quit

Be careful with this man! If you are offered a job of less pay after an a certain amount of time on unemployment and the company that offers you the job reports that you turned it down, your unemployment will automatically stop and you will have to fill out a fact finding form as to why you didnt take the job. The states decision will take upwards of 6 weeks to make and you will not receive benefits during this time. Just a heads up. Also, I do not know what tier you are on but you will eventually have to take your work search in to be reviewed so make sure its complete or thats another BS form that takes weeks to fix!!

Sorry for all the post but I just worked in this field for a good while...Your statement is true, however most employers that we talked to on a daily basis consider people who are unemployed for 6 months or more not hireable(sp?) Therefore, you are screwed either way. Something to think about

Which is exactly what I'm doing. I do some freelance side work from home and make sure it's underneath my weekly "allowance" of $100. I report everything I make in addition to my unemployment, even if it's just $10.

Funny part is, I haven't even been to the point of an actual "job offer" out of any of the three. Those were the only ones that even called me for an interview out of the hundreds of resumes I've sent out. I've worked for some pretty large firms as well - it's not like I have a crap resume. I've worked for Ford Motor Company, PriceWaterhouse Coopers, Pella Windows, Ecolab and Home Depot as well as some small companies. If I'm having this much trouble, I'd hate to see what people who don't have a spouse who could step up and put the food on the table are doing.

$500 a week sounds like a lot until you have to sustain a family on it. We have cut our budget to the bone and we still live like kings compared to the majority of the world. The fact that I'm sitting in front of a computer in my own house and have high speed internet at my fingers in an air conditioned house with a car in the driveway is testament to that.

And by the way..... the joke was funny as hell! :)

you got the A/C on today? it's warm here, but not that warm! lol

i was unemployed for a year and a half. my wife had a job, but i still thought that i should pay half of everything. never went on unemployment, did home renovation type work when i could find it and sold stuff. not drugs, i mean my stuff, guns, car parts, etc and racked up $3k worth of credit card debt. yeah i was an idiot and should've just gone on unemployment
