What is the process for buying a vehicle with a title (not salvage or anything like that) from a junkyard?

They told us that they cannot release the title because they aren't a dealer. Essentially the title will be voided. How do I get a new one in my name, or is this even possible?

Vehicle will be an offroad only deal, but I need it registered and tagged to get it to the trails (don't want to invest in a towing setup yet).

Why wouldn't they be able to sign the title over to you?

Ooooh I bet it was never officially changed to them.

You could probably get a bonded title.

And BTW by definition "driving to the trails" is not "offroad only" lol.

likely you'll have to get a bill of sale from the junk yard and use that for a salvaged title application. Otherwise, you'd have to track down the previous owner, have them get a new title, then sign it over to you, then you get a new title in your name

It's not so much the cost as the total pain in the a$$ process. I was looking to do the same with a Samurai frame and tub that I aquired in some horse trading. The DMV lady said there was a title in Virginia, but couldn't tell me the owner's name. She tells me about the bonding process. I need two bills of sale (one from who I got it from which needs to be notarized and one from the guy who he got it from) and I have to have my insurance company issue me an insurance bond for 1.5x the value of the vehicle (they have the values at the DMV). Then, you have to fill out some paperwork and make sure there are no cross-outs, white-outs, errors of any kind and they send it all off to Raleigh.

No wonder so many people illegally transfer vin plates....

On a side note, anyone got a vin plate and title for a Samurai?!?!?! :)

Are the laws regarding titles just this bad in nc? Are SC, TN, and VA any easier on titles?

Vermont DMV works fer motorcycles, might be worth checking out on other vehicles.

Eh, I think Im going to stay away from it then. Honestly they wanted 700 for it ('96 2 Door 5 speed XJ, running, with 4"lift and roller tires), but it doesn't have front axle shafts and its got a fair bit of rust on the rockers and the interior is basically trash. Its not really what I am looking for, and URE closes this weekend anyways so I have 3 months to get what I really want. For 700-800 more I can get something in a bit better shape.
