Ok my zl has 345,000 miles on it and motor is getting pretty worn out. I was needing a lil more input on the whole sbc motor swap. Don't want a dodge motor..... I have a 400 sbc here carb. I was wondering if the adv. Adpters kit will work with it. For starts I'm gonna run my 400 untill I can get up the money for a lt1 or ls1. I'm gonna keep my ax15 and I got the rebuild kit for it as well. Id love to see sum photos or info on the lt1/ls1 swap into the zj. I looked and found not really much info. The lt1 is a tq motor and that's what makes me look at it. But a ls1 powerd 5 speed zj just sounds sick

I know that the ax15 will hold up behide a 350 chevy for a while. I want to keep my 5 speed.

When i find the lt1 or ls1 i will prolly be forced to go 4l80. but i hope not. Ive had bad luck with chevy transmissions in my xj. I blew up 3 transmissions in my xj.

Assuming this will not be registered?
You'll never get a carb 400 inspected.
Lol ax15 . Sbc...I'll give it 2 throttles....
Why go 4l80 if it's a trail rig (I'm assuming its trail only here) th350 or th400 isas strong and a lot easier to swap.

To be honest give a lil more input and you will get more help...heck I do t even know what you are swapping it in or what your plans are....

IMO spending the cash to hook a Ax-15 to a SBC is wasted money and even if you get it to last their probably wont be too many folks lookin for those parts if you ever go to sell.

driven on the road and that photo was a th350 that blew up under normal driving in my xj. I dont climb rocks or anything crazy. i mudd and maybe a few lowland trails. Nothing to hard.

I could put a 305 crate motor that my buddie has in it. I want to retain the stock 5 speed and driveline for now nothing crazy just better motor. Someone told me to get another 4.0 and turbo it. I dont think that will work for mudding.

Ive blown up so many th350 and th400s its not funny they dont hold up to anything ive ever thrown at them. not even the 4l60.

I live in nc i can get it road legal no problem my xj with lifted 35s with chevy 456s locking axles and 383sbc and 350trans. and they passed it no problem

If you've went thru that many autos how have you kept a Ax-15 alive???

It has never gave me any problems. and i mean ive jumped down it alot. turned it 5 grand plus ripped trunks of trees out of the ground and burn out on a set of 31s.
never missing a lick. No grinds or problems at all.

But clutch has 250 thousand on it. that is starting to go a lil.

been done 3 times daily driving 60mph when it happend the first time. Put another one init and 5 months later blew that one out. 700r4 didn't last but maybe 3 weeks. Chevy transmissions have always given me problems. That transmission blew a hole in my floor and would have killed sumone if they were riding in passager seat. Lucky I was driving alone. 60mph on 35s with 456 gears it killed a lot of transmissions before I got rid of it.

Why not build a 4.6 or 4.7 stroker out of the 4.0? I have one in my ZJ with 35's, 4:10's and an AX15

what the power like and how much did that set you back?

That damage pictured didn't happen driving down the road.
Sorry you are trolling. Think about this, if the tranny did come apart, and blow through the floorboard, the extra piece wouldn't be in one piece still and you likely wouldn't have found it.

Sorry your story doesn't add up. Damn near every c class buggy in ecors is running a 350 or 400 .....and there is a lot more power there than what you are talking and we have never seen that type of failure.

If you are breaking multis that is a you problem or a bad install brave etc. Not a tranny problem.

fact the ax is a much lighter duty tranny than any of the mentioned chevy trannys.
If it's a zj, a carb'd motor will not be legal in nc.

Btw he 4l60 is "essentially" a th350 with od and electronic control...so your statement "not even" the 4l60 doesn't make sense.

Are you saying you ran a 4l60 behind a carb'd sbc?

No bullshit it blew up on me rolling 60mph down hwy 101. That part was in th cab of jeep. I have other photos of hole in floor of jeep. It was a 350 transmission and the 1st and 2nd went out in the 400. No one really knows what cause the transmission to go cause it had 50,000 on it. The xj I had was carn and it passed every year. I alrdy talked to the dmv it is be low the 96 obd2 test so as long as I have the smog pump and all on my motor they don't care. I can have title amended for the motor change as well.

As far as the 4l60 statment. They are garbage transmissions. I've helped my friends change many of them out of there camaros and what not.

Ive blown up so many th350 and th400s its not funny they dont hold up to anything ive ever thrown at them.
You are getting your trans built from the wrong person. My $375 turbo 350 has taken all the abuse I could throw at it. Yes, I've had 2 failures but they have both been my fault.

You need to find a new trans builder.

this will be my last post in this guys thread.
where the piece is blown out on that 350 is no way logical. it is in the low/reverse circuit,(that is the low/reverse piston in the pic) at 60 mph even if he were to throw it into low it wouldn't have caused that. there is no rotating mass right there that would have caused that piece to shoot through his floorboard. the 200psi in the circuit is in no way enough to bust the case and make it go through the floorboard.

he is probably not getting rebuilt trannies,he is probably buying junkyard units, and as everyone knows all the cars in junkyards only have 50,000 mile on them.

If I were to use another chevy transmission id need a driveside drop transfer case. That being said I know the chevy np241 were made with a driveside drop but I don't know what they came in to find one. And that only a parttime case like I got now. I really would like to keep stock look inside for the most part. My xj had the shift for trans case on passager side and it was gutted. Didn't look very we
At all.

As far has cooking transmissions if it happens again I will be more then happy to ship the transmission to who ever wants to look at it. Not doing 456s so motor will not be turning 3-4 grand at 60mph
