So I ran out of oxygen on Sat of a holiday weekend. Doh! Gotta wait til Tuesday because the tank I bought can only be swapped with the place I bought it. Great, just great. Then I call them this morning asking about price to swap, that was reasonable (23 bucks or so) and planned to send my father over to return the spent tank and get a full one (very hard for me to get there during their business hrs as I work 30 miles in the other direction). So I just happen to ask if they can help load the tank for him (he is 76 years old and getting quite feeble frankly), they ask what kind of vehicle. I say, dodge pickup with a shell on the back. They say, no they won't load into that because it's enclosed. I guess liability, OK if he loads it they just won't do it. WTF. Obviously I can't send dad so they can watch him struggle trying to load it. It would seem the liklihood of hurting his back is much higher than anything with the damn gas in the back of his truck. This world is upside down.....rant off.

You own the tank? Screw them, take it somewhere else and swap it...its that easy.

I do own it (or at least I assume I do). I 'bought' it 3 or 4 years ago and I just pay to swap it out. No monthly fee/rent, record of it or anything like that. The tank is still within it's test window. Who takes 'others' tanks nowadays? I assumed that all these places are going to not swap a tank that isn't theirs originally (has their stamp and sticker on it). Certainly Northern tool wouldn't exchange it this weekend when i needed some gas! (*&^%ers :flipoff:)

Id send your dad on over....I cant imagine many folks would watch a retiree struggle....even if they did their would be other customers offer a hand.

national welders won't help you. if i send my wife they make her load it by herself.

You have inadvertantly given me an idea....I'll send the Mrs. over there. Lord have mercy on them if they tell her to load it herself. She'll come home with 2 tanks when she's all done with their asses. Can be downright frightening when pissed.

The problem with my dad going over, is he's from that generation that would never think of bitching. He'd just struggle his ass off in the parking lot, throw his back out and scratch up his tailgate and drag himself back into the cab and drive home rather than throw a fit. Just the way he is and many from that age group. I obviously didn't seem to get that same gene :D

Northern/thoroughbred will take it but will charge you a $20 fee for changing your tank for theirs. (assuming you tell them and the person swapping knows any better). I've never had any problem swapping any of my tanks with various places, just don't say anything to give them any reason to try and charge you extra. Ive also had the guys at airgas/ntl welders in charlotte help me load tanks many times...it would suck putting a 300cuft tank in there alone.

Basically, just like everything else in life...pretend you know what you're doing/don't say anything more than you need to and things usually go a lot easier.

If you do all your "fabbing" on the weekends, it's worth switching to the northern tool tanks (you still own it) just for ease of night time and weekend swapping.

Or make friends at your LWS. A guy at one place here (now closed) gave me his cell number, in case I ever needed a refill or anything on a weekend. Had the same deal at our NAPA back when I had a couple of rebuilds going on (and was in there buying parts every couple of days). I guess small towns are good for something.

If you can find a Roberts Oxygen, go there. Ive been taking my tanks to the one in Bessemer City/Gastonia, and havent looked back.

LIABILITY

ever seen what happens to an enclosed vehicle when a gas cylinder has leaked or for some other reason exploded ?

If they loaded the truck and something happeend to your Dad as a result, who are you going after ?

They've been thru it many times

I've put LP cyclinders in my SUV, but ALL windows are open and I am the only person in the vehicle, will NEVER put them in the trunk of our car. I've seen folks do this with kids in the car, completely oblivious the risk.

Sure, it doesn't happen that often, but it happens, and the events leading up to it can be very innocuious and uneventful, until things go bad.

Be pissed about it, it's not personal, it's business, dead folks don't make good repeat customers.
