I just got about 95% confirmation today that I will be deploying to Kandahar Airfield in the coming weeks. I'm going to work as a base paramedic with RMSI-Medical Solutions. I understand this is the largest base in Afghanistan, is well protected and has frequent but inaccurate rocket attacks almost on a daily basis. Have any of you guys spent some time there and can give me a bit of detail on what to expect, etc. I'm both excited/nervous at the same time but am looking forward to getting this kind of experience.

It's been a couple of years since I have been there but it's not bad considering, well that is Afghanistan. It is pretty Americanized there. PX, gyms, Burger King, Subway, Pizza Hut, etc. and the Canadian version of Dunkin Doughnuts (Horton's?). But some of those places might have been closed down, like the doughnut place because I think the Canadians are gone or leaving. Your job will keep you busy but there will be enough distractions there to fill any free time. I stayed out on FOB's in the middle of some bad places that had nothing, so when I passed through KAF and stayed there a day or two it seemed like R&R. I mean you can grab a Whopper and not get shot at while trying to take a dump. Yea it get's rocket and mortar fire, and not to make light of the situation, it's a big place so less of a chance of getting hit. Be familiar with where all the bunkers are along the various routes you travel. If you have to go to Asscrackistan, KAF or BAF are the best places to be. Safe travels. PM me if you like some more info.

BTW, no Jeeps there, all Toyotas, only thing that country got right.

Yea, turns out our ambulance is a Yota Landcruiser. I've ran across a few of the guys I'll be working with, one of which happens to be from NC and the other is big into off roading so I think I'll fit right in. Got my offer letter in my email today so as soon as I sign and send back it's official!

I was there from may 09 to feb 10. IMO it sucked ass. It's so damn large and there are so many people. It seemed like every person had a damn car which made traffic kind of stupid. There was a gigantic pond full of shit in the middle and it made the place smell quite pleasant at times. We lived in 40 man tents the entire time with bunk beds and tent showers. Granted there are some good things like the boardwalk area there are plenty of places to eat i.e. fast food. The DFAC in the south park area was good but crowded at times. There are plenty of gyms to go to. You heard correct, it is common for rocket attacks but they never seem to be very accurate. My advice to you is stay busy in your off time and enjoy some of the pretty ladies walking around.
