I've got a 10 yo son that has been rocking the old school BMX bike like we did when we were youngans.

He's got a birthday on Monday and we've been talking about replacing his bike for a few months now.

His buddies in the hood have quasi gotten into riding and we've built a little jump and decent berm out back for them to have some fun on. I can see this perhaps turning into some mountain biking in the future so figured I'd get some opinions on here as I know some of y'all are into that.

So, before we head down to the Schwinn shop in HP and drop a left nut, can you guys help point me in the right direction?

Pretty much looking for a good, entry-level bike that he can grow in to a bit.

Disclaimer (for those that don't know me): I'm cheap, but don't mind spending coin where it makes sense.

Thanks in advance!

Awesome! looks like the beginnings of a pump track back there.

How tall is he?

10 is sort of borderline - not big enough yet for a 26/27.5" or front fork. If you're looking for a long-term purchase, getting him into an adult frame makes some sense, but he's likely going to be a too small for it.

As a point of reference, Sara is 4'-11" and has outgrown her 24". Robert is almost big enough for a 26" as well, but those bikes are going to weigh a lot more than the kid-oriented Woom/Cannondale that they've been riding. I'd like to keep the boys on 24" bikes for a few more years.

We bought this bike for our son a few years or so ago:

He has been very happy with it. He has grown a ton over the past 2 yrs though. He is about 11.5 yrs old now and almost 5'4" tall, so he has outgrown it. I put a bar stem riser on it and a taller seat post to keep him going until his birthday this fall when we will get him an adult size bike.

He's currently 4'-7" (gets his height from his momma)

Meanwhile, my 6yo is 4'-3" (hate it for my oldest šŸ˜¬)

The Trek posted above is a solid option. Cannondale has some:

Woom is great (we've had several), but for what the Woom 6, Woom 6 Off, and Woom 6 Off Air cost, I have a hard time recommending them. Great components, lightweight, but you could spend that money on a S or M frame adult bike and have something he could ride for longer.

I'd try to stick with a 1x drivetrain (no front derailleur). Front fork really isn't necessary (adds weight, and he's probably not heavy or fast enough to see a benefit). Likewise, discs (hydraulic or cable) are objectively better, but probably unnecessary on a kid's bike. They add maintenance too.

Thanks for all the help to those that chimed in. I'm only a month & a half late, but we got my biggest lil man a new ride today.

You're officially the first person to spot him without me having to say "anything else stick out about that pic"
