what is everyone's experinces with kids in braces? We just brought our oldest in, he's almost 10 yrs old (wow time flies), his mouth is a mess. His bottom front teeth hit the roof of his mouth. Dr. quoted $2k for 'pre-braces' hooked to his baby molars, then another $5.5k if we come back to finish off the treatment when his adult teeth come in. This sucks, then I have twin 8.5 year olds who are pretty much in the same boat.

Holy shit. My wife had braces at 30 years old. I think they were about 4k. I have no idea what "normal" prices are, my kids haven't gotten that old yet.

I had braces from 8 years old til I was almost 15, my front two teeth were almost sideways. Im 23 now and my parents still tell me I better keep my teeth nice cause the spent 10k on them. This was for about 6 years of them.

We had to hold off a bit because both ours need them. My daughter who is 13 just got started & hers is going to run me around $6200. My son is 10 & his are worse so we are going to start him 1st of the year. I am 41 & I had them from 9 years old until 17 but that was the 80s & my parents spent a little over $3000.

I had them as a kid when I was 10. I didn't take care of my braces nor teeth...it was a nightmare for me. Ortho wanted to expand my palet, and all this extra stuff...and I didn't do well with it, so I had everything removed....and for 12 years I hated my teeth and never smiled big for pictures or people. always hiding my smile. I recently was back in braces for 2 years and was the best thing I ever did...although now I was paying for them myself and took very good care of my teeth and now I love smiling and laughing and has really changed how I am and talk to people now.

Bottom line is 7.5k is alot of money...get some other quotes.....Can I ask who you went with? If I can make a suggestion. Dr. Mitchell and Bartlett are INCREDIBLE. They have offices in Greensboro, K-Ville, and Summerfield. They will work with you and I actually enjoyed going to my appointments.

I wish I had just sucked it up as a child and took better care of my teeth and hadn't had to do it for a second time.

My daughter has the same sense of humor as I do...I use to ask people if they had seen my new Harley and then my Daughter would smile and show her braces....this was late 90's her teeth were decent to start with but the braces still ran $6500, if I recall I put $1000.00 down and $150.00 a month for the balance...

How much if you wait until his adult teeth come in? Considering how much he may grow and how different in size adult teeth are from baby teeth, I would not spend the money to start until his teeth are actually ready. They move easier when they first come in and they're young and growing. I had a couple of baby teeth pulled, to make room for the adult teeth and make room for them all to shift, leading up to braces but I was really pretty fortunate. My parents worked at Duke and got a deal through an affiliated orthodontist... and I only had to wear them for 13 months (off just before I started HS!) because they moved easy. My jaw is really small, so they all just barely fit, though!

Dr. M&B is where we went, heard a lot of good feedback. I say we, I really mean wife and kids...I was at work trying to pay for this. Apparently its pretty critical to get them on his baby teeth now to make room for the adult teeth, then it will be less work on the adult teeth later. Seems like this is the trend in child orthodontics too, a fair amount of their schoolmates have braces.

The wife had braces. She says the braces on baby teeth are con by dentists to make more money.

Dr Mitchell and Bartlett are seriously awesome. I had Dr. Mitchell (Yowza!) and she was just a pleasure to work with and always did things the way I wanted. I mention them to anyone that is looking to get orthodontic treatment. I cannot say enough great things about them.

I stand by my earlier comment. I'd definitely, at least, get a second quote/opinion.

Yeah I'm the first one to cry shenanigans, but this kind of makes sense, or they put a good sell job on us. They are not moving the baby teeth, they are anchoring off the baby molars to move the front adult teeth into place. His lower teeth are digging into the roof of his mouth, supposedly damaging the roots of upper teeth. The pediatric dentist noted this too, referred us the the orthodontist, but they are all probably golf buddies.

Did they show you x-rays of this condition? I understand where you're coming from, I went to the surgeon my dentist recommended for having my wisdom teeth out with no question, but I trust my dentist. And it didn't cost $8K.

I was in 8th grade when I got my braces and all my adult teeth had come in, had to have 4 pulled, and wore mine for a little over 3 years.... my mom spent I believe $4800 on mine.

If you don't mind me asking, who is your kids' pediatric dentist?

My son had em and they wouldnt put em on until all his baby teeth were gone. They even said if he didnt have all of his baby teeth gone by a certain time they would pull em.He had braces in the 7th and 8 th grade and they were off by the start of his freshmen year.Cost us around $6500.Not sure about the pre braces thing. Its just one of those things you gotta do,it sucks and I feel for ya.We paid $2500 down and made arrangements to pay once a year after income tax time.

get a second (or third) opinion. have a 14 y/o with braces, the total price was $3800, very happy with this orthodontist. the first quote we got was $7200 and the guy spent more time explaining financing than what he knew about teeth. a few of my daughter's friends had the "pre-braces" and this seems to be an extra income generator more than anything else. i shoulda gone to dental school...
