With the thread going about pocket knives it got me thinking about what folks use to sharpen their knives. So what is the best method/tool to accomplish this?

I use a cheap "V" ceramic knife honer. It's works better than than anything else for MAINTAINING an edge. NOTE, there's a difference in sharpening and honing. a honer will restore a sharpened knife but will do nothing for a dull knife.

the cheapo Grocery store ceramic honer I have puts a factory edge on my knife. with as much as I use my knife, I hit it with about 4-5 licks every 2-3 days. I think it was about $5 and I can shave with my knife after I hone it.

Same here! I've got a fairly good electric sharpener for the kitchen knives, but it doesn't put an edge on them nearly as good as my ceramic V-hone. Its a $5 Lansky from Walmart or Dicks.

I got this cheap plastic thing that has two rod that cross (one has a grit looking surface and the other like a file). great for my carry work knifes. A few draws and back for more abuse. My hunting and colector stuff gets honed by Arkansas Perfect flat stones and oil. The turtle hatchet gets the file. Large flat blades that are real rough hand filing get them in shape pretty quick, then transfer to ceramics or honing stones. I worked for one of my Great Uncles who was a tool and blade sharpener. He did everything from pocket knifes to carbide tipped anything back to chainsaws and 30 ft bandsaw blades all in one day. Learned alot.

I have 2 Gatco outfits, one has diamond stones and will sharpen a negected knife quick. I have the small ceramic V sharpeners in my kitchen, tacklebox, hunting gear, and truck ready to maintain or when I need a quick sharp edge.

Got a couple sets of diamond stones. 50, 300, 500, 1200 grit, I think. I can get an edge on bout anything with them. A ceramic hone will then fine tune & keep an edge.

1 double stone, a red brick & an old piece of leather.

Lansky sharpener work good

I have been using a basic Lansky for over a decade and it has worked very well for me. If you have a good knife and take your time you can get near surgical sharpness. Sometime soon it should probably be replaced. I have never tried the diamond stones for it, but I bet it is the shiznit.

Anyone sharpen their serrated blades? I have messed around with it a little, but I don't enjoy the tedium. This is why I choose a straight blade w/o serrations.
