I have a 95 ZJ wit the 4.0 and when driving slow at about 20mph theres a clunking/knocking noice and it seems to me its coming from sommewhere around the transmission or transfer case. I thought it was the front driveshaft ujoints so i got 3 and took the driveshaft out and decided to drive cause wit no driveshaft i could find out if it was the ujoints or not. It didnt make a difference and i am stumped, any help guys???

it almost sounds like it from something that spins as part of the drivetrain. idk i havent been able to I.D. anything. My uncles a mechanic so im going to have him listen to it. And im changed my rear driveshaft ujoints last week

does it happen in 4wd as well-i've had my transfer case bind coming out of low range, just had to cycle it in & out a couple times before it freed up & released all the way-it sounds similar to what you described.

Does it happen while turning or get louder? Does the clunking pick up with speed?

I've put 3 front CV shafts in my co-workers 95 ZJ from clunking.

My 2000 TJ Knocks sometimes from around the tranny tunnel while driving, We have narrowed it down to my Tranny having worn bushings where it sits on the Belly Pan. Have a friend get underneath yours and wiggle your rear drive shaft while you sit in the drivers seat to see if you can re-create the knocking.

the knocking doesnt get any louder in 4wd and the faster u go after 20mph the quieter it gets. like after 25 you cant hear it anymore. I do have alittle trouble getting the transfer case out of 4hi into 2wd, i can try cycling it a few times and drive it.

HAHA

yes it is a automatic. but i cycled thru my transfer case aand drove down a few paths with it 4x4 and put it back in 2wd and now the noice is gone. for now atleast we will see how it sounds again tomorrow. But Rodney Eppes what about the flexplate??

Check flex plate, if trans mount is bad it will shift trans so flexplate hitts housing, i had something knocking on my zj and it turned out to be my exhaust hitting engine sounded like a machine gun till i got up to speed... hope this helps

Check yours trans mount it might be worn and allowing to must movement sounds like!?

is there any easy way to check to see if the mount is bad? and after shifted thru 4wd a few times it usually goes away for alittle while...

To check the mount just crawl under your jeep and push the tail of the transfercase side to side and see if there is excessive play.

It's usually pretty visible that a mount is bad but if you can push up on the tranny near the mount and get movement in any direction it's bad.

sounds alot like a bent range selector fork or worn wear pads on the range fork in the transfer case, allowing the shift ring to slide back & forth, partially engaging on the splines.
