The wife is interested in buying a lake front lot in the mountains of NC. The plan would be to buy the lot now, and build a small house/cabin when we are close to retirement. Can anyone recommend a lake up in the mountains of NC to check out? I'd prefer a high altitude lake for cooler summer temperatures.

lake hiwassee in murphy nc is an awesome lake but land is kinda pricey. not a big party lake, very family friendly, and not that populated

Smith Mountain Lake is awesome but bring some $$$.

^^what he said, I lived on SML for about 12 years, beautiful lake but in the last 10 years it has been booming like Norman or Wylie...

Lake James! I do a lot of grading for the home site here. Gonna be pretty costly though.

Santeetlah or Fontana

Or if you want mountains, crystal blue water, great fishing and can slide South...Jocassee....of curse not many private lots on jocasee

Watauga is an amazing lake. Huge and one of the cleanest in the southeast.

Thank you for all the suggestions. We live in the Triad area now, but the lake doesn't have to be 'close' since this will be a retirement situation (20-25 yrs away) and we will have time to make the drive to and from our current residence. We would prefer something quiet with as little development as possible. It doesn't need to be a big lake either.
