Guys I'm heading that way next weekend. My parents got a cabin for the weekend so I'm gonna drag the wife and the baby out there. My question is do you guys know of any good non paved roads I can take my family out into the back country a little. I was trying to find some fire roads and stuff and I'm not having much luck finding anything online. I want to try and find some stuff we can find some nice views, maybe some waterfalls or something of the like. Let me know if you guys know of anything.

Just take #9 from blk mtn to lake lure and you will enjoy the ride . Pay admission and hike to the top of chimney rock and you will not regret it .

Get on the parkway and you will see all kinds of stuff .

Brevard has looking glass falls but its about 45 minutes away .

I second that...I bear hunt up that way and it is a beautiful ride from black mtn to lake lure.

I'm a local yocal and used to work in Black Mountain. Not too many sight seeing Gravel Roads close by...but I agree also that #9 is a nice pavement ride.

If you want to head up the BRP and hit SR2178, its a gravel road which will take you from the BRP to Barnardsville, NC. This is Colemans Boundary area and there is a nice 100ft waterfall close to the top. Excellent repelling spot!

Mt. Mitchell is close and a very good place to see amazing sunrises/sunsets.

When in BM, at the main light go straight onto Montreat Rd and follow in into Montreat. Stay Straight and follow it to the road ends. This is a trail head for some decent hiking.

Caminos is a good place to eat in BM...if they are still open.

Another short ride is to stay on HWY 70 out of BM heading East. Right near Ridgecrest is the OLD road over the mountain. Mill Creek Road. This winds over the mountain and down into Old Fort. You will come across a natural gyser close to the bottom and behind it is an old restored railroad lodge from when they first cut the rails over the mountains. The high-ups stayed there when in town for progress checks. I think you can rent it for personal use, but its not cheap from what I hear....

Thanks for the info guys. My in laws live about 10 miles south of lake lure so I'm familiar with the ride up 9. I used to ride my mountain bike up there.

I know when my wife and I first came to visit her parents years back we went up into Pisgah national forest and rode some fire roads and did a bunch of short hikes to some waterfalls and stuff. Do you guys know about anything up in that area.

Search for DuPont State Forest. Some of the falls are Hooker Falls, Tripple Falls, and High Falls. Plenty of easy hiking trails.

Directions from Asheville (via Brevard): I-26 East to exit 40 for Highway 280/Airport exit toward Brevard. Turn left on U.S. 64 as you enter Brevard past Wal-Mart. Travel east on U.S. 64 for 3.7 miles to the Texaco station in Penrose. Turn right on Crab Creek Rd and continue 4.3 miles and turn right on DuPont Rd. Ascend and descend; after 3.1 miles, find the Hooker Falls parking lot on the right just before the Little River bridge. Open during daylight hours.

Gees...I feel like I should be saying "Housekeeping, you want me fluff pillow"!!!
