Got an 83 FJ60 that has ps on it but it is just for looks. I get VERY intermitant power steering as the pump seems to work for a second then not for the rest of the day.

Anywho... I have access to a complete motor from an 82 model that is out of the vehicle. I pulled the pump and bracket off. How in the hell are you supposed to get the one off the engine that is in the vehicle? You can pull the front two bolts that secure the pump to the bracket but the back bolt can't come completely out since it hits the exhaust. Without tearing out half the engine compartment you cannot access the bolts to remove the bracket. It seems easy in the manual, it all happens in two sentences (remove the mounting bolts, remove the pump....BS)

Any help on the matter would be great since I am trying to get this resolved by Tuesday for a trip to Harlan and my wife won't let me wrench during the weekend. :shaking:

:wtf:
For what its worth my plan is to remove the front two bolts that mount the pump to the bracket. Next back the third bolt out until it hits the manifold and cut it off with a small hacksaw.

Does the pump move forward once the front bolts are out? If so you could just move the pump forward as the rear bolt comes out. I.e. bolt stays stationary and pump moves away from bolt.
(I'm assuming the rear bolt is in there fore/aft.)

The bracket sandwiches the pump. When I was pulling the donor pump I thought it would be easy until the rear bolt wouldn't go far enough out. Had the whole thing rotating on the rear bolt with no more than 1/8" of thread keeping it in. Frustrating at best. But not nearly as bad as navigating a rock garden while fighting 36' tires aired down with lockers. Steering woes caused my last good roll. l

Going to get as much yard work done as possible today and hopefully get a hall pass from wifey to tackle more this evening. Try to get a pic of the nonsense then.

A prybar can be your friend here.

Got it swapped yesterday. As mentioned earlier it was the third and rear bolt that was a pain. I removed enough hoses and the air cleaner to be able to get a small pneumatic sazall in there and cut off the bolt head. Next I used needle nose vise grips to get the bolt to back out. Believe it or not the bolt bottomed out on manifold again. I used a screw driver and hammer to force it out.

New pump installed and very secure with only 2 of the 3 bolts installed. I will post a few cell pics later.

Couple of pics. Bolt hits the manifold. Sawzall solution. Allas removed.
