We are finishing up putting a pool in our backyard. We are going to border it with rock instead of mulch or pinestraw.

I can seem to find a definitive answer on how thick I need to put this stuff down.

We would like to go with the larger round river rock but it might be cost prohibitive to do so. So we might go with the 1-3" round rock.

We are looking at close to 720 sqft of rock. So we will have quite a bit of money in just rocks.

Any advice?

I bought some wiskey Barrels off a guy in Rock hill that brings back river rock from TN, his basket price seemed good, from what I remeber, im not on FB but let me see if my wife can find him again. He just buys truck loads of rock and Barrels wholesale then sells them for a small profit on the side so he isn't coming back to town empty.

Searched thru several months of text and found his contact info. Not sure what he has on face book. He does not text you have to call him.

If you're going with 1-3" stone then plan on 2''-3'' . I would think that you'll have a textile fabric underneath so you don't want that showing through. And it's best to create a "sunken" area of about 1.5"-2" for the stone so it's not totally above finish grade and migrating out of it's area. Consider using steel edging on areas where it will be meeting lawn or mulch areas. Your pool and hardscape edges will act as the barriers along those edges but again make sure that you leave an edge to contain the stone along the sides of those too. In your intended stone areas with them made to be below the finished grade of the surrounding paved and landscaped areas make sure you allow for drainage out of the below grade stone beds. I hope I made sense explaining this.

Yes, use some decent non woven fabric under the rocks to keep weeds and dirt out of the rocks and pool. Thickness is preference since it’s decorative. I’d plan on at least 3” since your rock is 1-3” and expect to selectively add in areas where you might see the fabric under the rocks.

I plan to do river rock or similar around our deck. It gets a lot of water there that runs down the slope towards it. I put down fabric, then a layer of brick nuggets. Next I’ll do the stone, but haven’t yet. I figure the brick nuggets will help keep the decorative rock from sinking into the ground, and brick nuggets are cheaper in bulk than any gravel or small rocks.
Honestly the brick nuggets look pretty good.

thanks. I am planning on fabric as well as as a metal border to keep the rocks where they belong. One issue that i may have is that the pool is about 4-5" higher than the yard. So keeping the rocks contained may be an issue.

Actually that is ideal. A gentle slope transitioning from the lawn to the steel edging and stone bed will work great.
