There's a guy who wants to trade his Dell Laptop for a guitar and I was wondering if this is a good laptop, or one I should pass up on.

His description:

Dell Latitude CPx. PIII 500MhZ 256Mgs ram. Fresh XP pro install. AVG free Av. Screen is nice and bright. Nice clean machine. Works great.

It's not a bad one... but not a good one, either. A 500mhz box with only 256MB of ram is going to suck it hard and long trying to run XP. Install 2000 or even 98SE, and it wouldn't be a bad machine for checking email and such.

All depends on what you need it to do and what you need it to be "worth" in order to justify the guitar trade. Figure a brand-damn-new Dell laptop can be had for about $500.... maybe $600.

Maybe I should pass on this one, because I like to visit sites like youtube.com and stuff. I do alot more than just open email, so this may not have enough memory or whatever. I appreciate your input!:driver:

Yeah, the latest and greatest technology of last month can be had in a $6-800 laptop. You can spend 5 times that on cutting edge stuff, but it will be a miniscule difference. If you want something that is good on battery, look at the Pentium M or the new dual processor stuff (i think most of em go by Duo). A good standard is 60GB hard drive, 512MB Ram, and a 1.5ish Ghz processor, with a DVD-RW drive. I bought an Asus a year ago with the above specs for $700, and while its not blazing fast, it does real good with everything. I upgraded to 1GB of RAM and use it some for Solidworks (3D modeling, graphics intensive). Only other recommendation is to stay away from Gateway, as I seen firsthand and also have heard nothing but bad things about them.

SAw the ad on craigslist. I would defnintely pass that up. 500MHz will not let you run much of anything unless you just want to do word processing and checking email

Thanks everybody!!!
The guitar is an acoustic/electric Applause (by Ovation) single cutaway in black
