I'm gonna need a new laptop and was wondering what some of you computer guys would suggest.
Here is what I will be using it for:
Email and stuff like that.
Surf the web, mostly NC4X4, JKOwners, YouTube, Pirate, Facebook, Hardline
Store Jeep Pics and videos.

I would like it to have a good operating system to get at least 5 years out of it
Good antiviruses protection, if there is such a thing.
Storage not important.
I won't play video games or watch movies with it so that not important.

Here is the kicker, I don't want to spend more than a couple hundred bucks.

Suggestions?

Chromebook.

Or maybe an ipad or android tablet with a bluetooth keyboard.

Aside from storing photos, tablet all the way. Instant boot time, awesome battery life, super light, and you can take photos...do GPS...etc.

If you had to store photos, agree, Chromebook or suitable Win 8 style netbook.

The Chromebook is basically just an internet appliance. Not sure it can do anything with GoPro videos.

I looked at chromebooks last night. It looks like most have the SD card input. I don't have GoPro but don't they use a SD card or equivalent?

Would the Chromebook not support video application transfer from an SD card? *edit, I think that SD spot is just for creating extra storage.

Chromebook works all off of purchased Google storage. It has no hard drive. I don't think it would serve your needs as well as other options. That being said, I have a chromebook that I have barley used. I haven't turned it on in almost 2 years. I'd sell it if someone is interested.

Buy a cheap lenovo at best buy or off tigerdirect.
Spend $250 it will do what you want forever.

Dont obsess over which processor it has, your needs dont care.
Get as new an OS as you can, but if you can get Win8 when Win 10 comes out this year all Win8 users can upgrade for free. that should keeep you fine for 5.

I bought a cheapo HP at Wal Mart 2 years ago and have been pleased with it. Was about $275 at the time. Nothing fancy, but for what I use it for (same as you) it works just fine.

I know that my older netbooks (plural because one is not enough) stress out running 720p and absolutely lock up on 1080p. They are around 1.6 GHz with 1gb ram on Win7 so not exactly ideal. All the new stuff seem to be running something equivalent or slightly faster on Win8. The SSD hard drives do help as mine do not have them but I would suggest opening up youtube and running something hi-res to make sure whatever you buy can run it. Also, just because it displays doesn't mean it will stream it over HDMI in case you wanted to use it to watch video on your television. Other than that, pretty much anything with a regular OS will do the trick. Lots of awesome Win 8 tablets at Best Buy for under $300 with an HDMI out.
