I use a acer at work but someone in my wifes family has one and has had to send it in a few time for repair and now she doesn't want a acer because she thinks it will have problems too. And everyone knows if mama aint happy aint no one happy

I have been shopping for the same thing lately. You can catch decent deals at Best Buy or Circuit city (well not so much anymore). Check out Dell's closeouts and refurb's as well. Can save alot of money and most of the time they have the same warranty. www.Tigerdirect.com has some good deals at times as well

I bought a factory refurbished Dell laptop direct from Dell's website and have been very pleased. Saved a good bit of money. I like refurbed electronics because you know that a human being actually tested it at the factory vs new units that only get a certain % tested.

Dell outlet

look for one that says scratch and dent under condition but is not cutting edge specs (think 3-6 months old)

S&D is their lowest discount level, it consists of 2 things new truly scratched and dented product and brand hammer never owned new product that is obsolete and needs blowing out.

I have bought 4 Dell outlet S&D Pcs and laptops this way none had a mark on them...as always YMMV and you get a full new warranty

We bought the cq60 compaq from office depot when it was on sale. It was around $375 after rebates. I absolutely love it, but its now up to $529. Best buy has it for $400 now.

I went to Best Buy and looked around and the guy there helped me out they have a Hp on sale and it is marked 599 but is ringing up 499 so cant get better then that here is some info about the one I got

Pentium dual-core processor
320GB hard drive
3072mb ddr2 sdram
Windows Vista Home Premium
Web cam

I dont know much about computers but I like this one so far it is very fast and easy to use so just hope the wife likes it too

Sounds like a good deal. HP is a decent company IMO; I've had great experience with several different models, though I'm currently a Gateway supporter. Whatever you do, don't buy Dell, it all comes down to dependability and customer support (Dell has neither).

How do the needs rank on the "durability" scale?
I'll throw in a note for Lenovo Thinkpads. They def target more of a "business" crowd and tend to be pricier, but if you dig for E-Codes via google etc, some good deals can be had. They are designed to take more abuse and live for the long haul. I love my T400, wife's R series was only $700 loaded.

I ordered a Dell Vostro for Mom back in Nov... she likes it, but the build quality is aweful (very cheap). While it looks stylish, it dosn't even have a latch for the lid/screen when it closes.. I can see that being a real issue once the hinge (yes singular) inevitably gets loose like all Dells do. And you could probably twist the case torsionally just like a dadgum spiral paper notebook it's so flimsy... just resting your palms hands on the body beneath the keyboard you can feel it bend.
Mom won't move it more than 2-3 times a year so she dosn't care, but if this will actually be ported around much... not my suggestion.
