Lawn mower steering

Steering rod popped of the husqvarna steering knuckle arm. Am I missing a retainer clip, or is the socket just wore out? Here's some pics. Besides the rod from steering wheel and knuckle arm, all I can find is this rubber band thingie that goes around the rod and base of the ball. Gonna try copious quantities of zip ties to git r dun tonight. What's the proper way to fix this?

Joint is worn, replace the rod.

X2 what he said. I have seen people weld a little tack to the bottom of the rod to extend the life a bit, but it's toast otherwise.

This is what I would do. Remove ball stud thing, weld rod end/heim joint on end of steering shaft and bolt it to the steering arm.

A few or them have a slide over clip like the rubber piece you found. Like on a throttle shaft. But these guys are right, it's just Wore out!
Mine are greasable.

There likely should be an e clip in there to hold the ball into the socket.

Nope, it's a rod end, similar to a heim but 90*. Standard stuff at cf Reece or any mechanical supply outlet. Threads not sure. 'can fix is baling wire instead of your zip ties. Full size tractors I've seen fixed with baling wire.

Really? I seriously had no idea. I'm sorry I'm brand disconnected. It's a ball and socket joint like a average tre. 'nuff said.

I thought of using a Heim rod end, I might actually have a few in the garage that are the correct size. That will be the long term fix.
This rod was pretty loose, but I needed to mow. After smacking it back on, I could easily pop it right off with a quick jerk of the wheel. It was surprising that the zip ties held, I didn't have much faith in that fix. With the rate the grass is growing, I'll have to fix it this weekend and mow right after.

I see, the replacement part comes complete with ballstuds 'pressed' in and the rubber clip/cover/boots.

I think of this thread everytime I start mowing. I park the mower when I'm done, and completely forget about the zip tie job. I guess my trail-fix has gone permanent.

In this case, I guess a d30 and stock xyzj steering box and linkage would be a upgrade! a little wide track though...

I just got through replacing similar joints on my grandfathers Cub Cadet with these: QA1 C Series Rod Ends CFR6. Worked out great.
