1986 4runner front bastard pack, leafs are fanning, any ideas how to keep them together? I thought about making a bracket, like a U and welding it to the bottom. I know if I weld it to the bottom spring it will take the "spring" out of that section, is this going to really be that big of a problem?

I wouldn't weld to the bottom spring, just buy some spring clamps and through them on there.

This.

Or you can make them out of flat stock a c-clamp, hammer and welder. No welding to the springs..

That's what I'm doing on mine, too cheap to buy clamps.

hammer form it to the end of the leaf there should be a hole or dimple to knock a indent in to it.

So has anyone used these? Do they hold up on the trail? What keeps them in place? From the pic they seem thin,

I have used them with good results. Like Jeff B said, there should be a hole in the leaf, and a dimple in the clamp. Line those up, hammer the ends around tight, and go wheeling.

I have always made clamps out of 2 pieces of 1/4" flat bar about an inch wide. Drill holes on each side and use 2 1/2" bolts to clamp them together. Works great, they don't move, and you can take them off if you need to add/remove a leaf later on.

I have a box of these from when I used to do lifts for a living. They work pretty good. I have had to weld the clamp together to keep them from spreading at times though.
I should've welded mine. I like the idea of sheet metal clamps like this instead of wider U-bolt style of plate/bolt...I think those might rub on extreme uptravel in my case.

So I said the heck with it, and bent up some 1/4 steel and made some clamps. I put four small welds on the corners, I turned the heat down so it just barely burnt in to the 1/4 steel. Welded the clamp and quickly dropped off to the spring, we will see how it does this weekend!
