Leaking propane tanks......again

Just curious if anyone else running propane has a problem with their tanks springing leaks? I just had two of my tanks refilled after a recent trip to Harlan and had put them back on the jeep yesterday. I noticed a smell of propane when I walked past it one time. I then did the soap water test and sure enough, BOTH of the tanks are leaking just slightly around the threads of the gauge. I have already had one of these tanks repaired for exactly the same issue around a year ago. Now I have two fresh filled tanks that are leaking. I've been through this before and last time the local gas company told me all they could do was dump the 'pane and fix the leaks. That will be another $50 bucks worth of propane down the tubes.

first off ,........... 2 tanks $50??? Way too much find someone else to fill. I pay like $16 each here.
Steel or Aluminum? I have never had that problem with any of mine, steel or Aluminum

Yep, I'm in the Charlotte area, and it averages around 3 bucks a gallon. I usually pay right at $24 to get a tank filled around here. They are steel tanks and like I said this isn't the first time I've had this issue. I don't know how long they have been leaking. My rig is back halfed like yours so if they have been leaking, I just haven't smelled it.

Dont know where you are in SC, but there is a place in York that fills em for $15...

I live in York too. Who does it for $15? Only place I know of in York is Fogels and the last time I got one filled there, it was almost $26 bucks.

If I'm wrong someone please correct me ( I also don't know if this is your case) but I think the propane tanks have to be inspected/recertified/ or disposed of after so many years of use (10 - 12 ??).

Just throwing one out there. Sucks that its happening again, hell LP used to be cheaper.

Repair it yourself. Ping the tank at the leak with a BRASS Punch. That is how they repair them. It is low pressure. It doesn't take much to seal it back off. KC

DON'T ping it with a steel punch or it could go:kaioken:

i pay $19.00 to get mine filled. and one of my aluminum tanks is leaking from the valve. anyone know how to fix that ?

Can you tighten the nut on top of the valve to crush the packing on the stem a little more?

I think it's every 12 years. I have 4 tanks and the oldest one is around 7 years old. It's one of the two that have started leaking. It's also the one I had repaired a year ago for the same issue. My other are around 4 years old.

Take the gauge out and put a plug in it.. those gauges suck anyway.

no , already tried that.
Uhhh, Put a new valve in it.
yes kevin i know. that was a dumb question. i was hoping for maybe a new seal. that would sound cheaper.:lol:

Well Harry (Fogel) is who I was talking about. Damn cant believe he went up that much, but it been maybe 6 weeks since I had one filled.

How in the world did you get it that cheap there? In the 2 years I've been running propane, he has always charged me no less than 24 bucks a tank. Are you talking about regular fork lift tanks?

Where I get mine, they have two prices. $2.29 a gallon if you buy less than 20 gallons. $1.99 a gallon if you buy more than 20 gallons. But thats only a difference of 2-3 bucks a tank

Either way, that's still considerably less than what I've been having to pay.
