I am putting a 6v accessory on my rig.
Of course I have a 12v system.
What can I do to keep from bbq'ing the 6v peice?

What exactly are you trying to put on your rig? Depending on the amp draw there are a couple of ways to do it.

Probably need some sort of a transformer to step down the voltage. You may have to have one custom made. No idea who could do such a thing though. Whatcha' putting on?

Depending on how much current the device is drawing, you can use a resistor like old heater motors use, or a voltage reducer like painless sells (preferred). What is it?

A horn.....an old, big, hopefully loud horn.
But it's 6v.

:poop: Hey look...a new smiley!

I checked out Painless. Seems Autozone sells Painless stuff and they list the reducer on their site. $25 tho'.

Any cheaper ideas?

prolly be ok to run on 12v for a horn...

Or measure the resistance of the 6V horn and install a resistor with the same resistance in series with the horn. It needs to be the same resistance since you are wanting to decrease the voltage by half.

in support of the previous reply:

Ballast Resistor / P/N:AL795 / about $6.50 @ AutoZone

Leave it to an old timer to pull that out of his hat !!!

Just plug it up, should be even louder. May not last as long though.

Then again, I guess you could go with these ^^^^ guys and do it the right way...
