I'm looking for some sweet Lego sets for the kiddo for Christmas. We got her a 3-in-1 set which panned out pretty good last time. It was the one with the Lighthouse, Killer Whale and Tug Boat. Any other sets you think would be good. Sometimes those things are way pricier than they need to be. Just looking for some ideas.

This is one where you can't go wrong. Is she a follow-the-instructions type, or a "okay, that was fun, now I'm going to build some random shit" type?

And how much are you willing to spend?

We've worked on following the instructions. She's pretty good at it really but she also likes to build random shit. I thought it might be a good idea to get the basic box that has random bricks and wheels along with another set. As far as figuring out what to spend I'm not sure. I think $50 is a good number.

We have 7 year old boy and 11 yr old I buy the big buckets of Legos so they can build shit as tall as them I think we have 4 of the 3 gallon Lego buckets full they're cheaper then the little design specific boxes when ya add cost up! And you get pieces the specific boxes don't have like the big green platforms/Windows/doors etc...

I have twin 6yo girls and they love legos. They usually build what the instructions show then tear it up and build random stuff similar to the original.

We usually buy the sets that have multiple build instructions for multiple different options with the same set of legos. They all may do it but we tend to look for those and the girls have been very happy with them.

We get an array of different lego sets from castle, to princess, to space, whatever. There has not been a set that hasn't been played with. We usually buy the ones with the themes the girls tend to like that particular month.

I like the bulk legos but it's difficult for younger kids to get their interest sparked and to truly understand how each piece can be utilized to create something. With the sets, they can visualize easier what pieces do what and can utilize them to then be creative.

Whichever set you get, it's always a good gift.

The 3-in-1 sets are all pretty cool.

Sara got this one last year:
Changing Seasons

It was pretty cool, because you built three different houses at different times of the year, depending on how you used the bricks. It looks like it might be on the way out, though. Here are some similar ones:

Beach Hut

Corner Deli

Mighty Dinosaurs

Vacation Getaways

Imagination sparked. We got the medium box for Boy last year when he was 5. We've also done the Lego "Chain Reactions" book. That was a little advanced for him, but he learned a little about simple machines. I don't consider it a waste at all. He's actually wound up with two of the medium boxes plus several smaller sets. He does pretty well just building from scratch now. The books will give them some basic building tips on how to build stronger structures.

Why went Legos like that when I was little? Get her a puppy instead you cheap ass

This is in addition to the dog, dumbshit.

Ive got daughters that love legos. They are 9, 14 & 16 y/o. They like the Star Wars stuff as well as the "Friends" sets. As for a 6y/o I'd say what ever cartoon cartoon characters she likes, find the one she likes. They damn near every cartoon character.

Other than that, get a platform and a bucket of random shit and let her be creative. Legis are awesome, they teach building skills.

Hey if you use super glue, they pretty well are structural!!

All my three (5 yo girl, 6yo boy, 11.7 yo girl) all have sets, built the directions once and went random from there. Except the boy, he likes the trucks trailers like the box shows. It was kind of a big thing for a while and just collect dust mostly now except from time to time and then they are playing with the other siblings sets since they are not what they have.

I LOVED legos as a kid, and my son does too. Delaney (6) hasn't really gotten into them like Jonas did (12).
He's now into robotics, we did Lego League using Mindstorms. That was a great learning experience. especially the programming... he just recently built a programmable machine to shuffle a deck of cards for him... from scratch...

You know you can buy them by the pound on ebay???

Sadly Legos are expensive! But there are deals like this to be had.
Also, check your local Craigslist, or even better, your local "young mom's community" - around here we have this group called Chesapeake Mommies that's a huge network of 30-something moms w/ little kids... we are always getting great deals on used stuff. And Legos are one of those things that are somewhat indestructible, "used" is just as good as new - as long as the kid wants to build their own shit.
We've probably saved hundreds of dollars buying Legos used, and I can't imagine the combined value of all of the plastic brick pieces in our house right now (especially those Mindstorm pieces)

She loves them and I enjoy building stuff with her. She says she wants to be an engineer some day and I hope she is.
It would be interesting to know how many engineers, architects, fab guys started w Lego's.

I love playing with Legos. Legos are painful who else has stepped on the random few late at night now that will wake your ass up.

Well then don't go for some off those of the wall lego sets, just go get yourself a tub of Legos and let your imagination come to life
