If I'm not mistaken, isn't it possible to go to the plate agency and request plate information (likely costs something, but not significant)?

I have a first name, cell number, license plate, Vin Number, invoice, and text messages. i believe that I need his full name and address so I can start a small claims proceedings. "Handling it" myself is not going to happen, no matter how much I might like to. He's from Charlotte area, so it's not like I might bump into him in town.

Anyone been through email claims procedures that would care to give me a walk through of the process in NC would be appreciated as well.

This dude pulled the last straw... I up until now usually allowed people in extenuating circumstances to pick up their vehicle with partial payment.. unfortunately for everyone that honors their word (in my book that is all you got... No credit checks, just word and honor, apparently nearly no one has it any more.. at least those that don't have their money together.. wait that's a sign anyway, but I TRIED over the years to be the nice guy, and come to think of it... Because I've been there before.. I was not always drowning in work. (Indy self employed mechanic) Almost anyone that's asked for such "extension" or "I'll have it Friday" has screwed me by far and large)

Thanks y'all.

i don’t know the process, but putting a mechanics lien on the vehicle will at least make it very difficult for him to sell legitimately, a new title can’t be issued until the lien is taken care of, may even be able to repossess the vehicle if the amount is great enough.
You’ll likely need a lawyer to accomplish this though.

Last I heard [years back], it cost $1200 to file Small Claims Court. And if the bum doesn't show, it may get continued. So you loose more time & work. Maybe a Mechanics Lean, would be better.

This.

And I've slowly figured out: The customers that you want to keep and more importantly want to retain you....pay.

I understand all the hardships and such but a business isn't a charity.

Charity is doing the work and expecting nothing.

Doin work for anything less then payment is bartering at best. Bartering is an honest mans form of gambling.....and the dishonest party wins. Remember odds are always on the house. I don't gamble.

Never mix charity, gambling, and business.

Small claims court is not hard to do, fee is low and you can add that into your suit amount. Here is a good link, Small Claims | North Carolina Judicial Branch

You have to decide where to file and usually the best choice is to pay the county sheriff their fee usually around $30 bucks to serve the person. Once served the case will be heard. Problem is even with a victory collecting the cash can sometimes be difficult.
