I may be buying a 1996 4 door cherokee with 4.0 and AW4 tranny. I would like to lift it 2-3" and have been looking at the rustys lift kits with AAL rear or new rear spring packs. I saw somewhere that with a 2" lift you do not need a SYE but with a 3" lift you do. Is this true? Has anyone run one of these rustys lift kits?

Thanks
Chad

If it's a 96, I'd bet the springs are sagging a bit. I'd recommend getting the entire leaf pack, instead of just the add a leaf.

that said, I've seen XJs have vibes at 2.5" lift, and others at 3.5-4.5 with no vibes. Worst case with a 3" lift, if you get vibes, you can do a tcase drop, and you'll be fine.

I have a TJ, but I've helped put the Rusty's kits on a few XJs over the years. Some people hate their stuff, but most complaints I've seen come from spings sagging to quick, and lots of those folks did the add a leaf, on already sagging OE springs.
:D

I have rustys 3.5 leafs (I think, thats what the PO told me), if anything, the rears are taller. The front coils are marked Rustys 3.5, plus i added 1" (measure out to 0.70") to level it out. NO SYE, no tcase drop, no major vibes.

You know people either love rustys stuff or hate it. Ive run two jeeps with rustys stuff in the past 6 yrs and I cant say anything but good things about them. You cant beat the price for his kits and i havent had any problems with them or customer service.

We had a Rough Country 3" for years that did fine. We put about 70K on it in a few years. We made longer control arms and that helped a lot...

i ran 6.5 inch rustys lift on mine for like 2 weeks w/out one and it just vibed a lil bit. you dont need an sye for that small of a lift. at most t case drop. o and def get all new spring packs

For 2", why wouldnt you just use rear lift blocks and coils spring spacers up front? Rear sway bar will interfere with the tire if you go this route, need to offset the wheels or ditch the sway bar.
