What are the laws for NC? Are they enforced?

Thanks

There's been some talk about this....I'm sure if you searched on here you could find more about it.

Anyway, it's no more than 6" above stock height without written permssion from the Comissioner of Motor Vehicles. They don't have a tire size limit, nor do they specify any headlight/tail light height restrictions.

Is it enforced? No...not really. Could they? Most certainly.

I had a buddy get ticketed for his truck being too high, but he's the only one I've ever heard of getting one.

I keep seeing this statement "written permssion from the Comissioner of Motor Vehicles", who is this and how do you do this?

I'm getting ready to do a SAS to my 2000 F150 and i'm using 02 F250 axles and plan on running 38" or 39" tires and hate to spend this money and ticked everytime i go out.

Thanks

The lift laws has an exclusion for any vehicle constructed on a truck chassis or with specialized equipment designed for occaisonal off road use (I.e. a transfer case)

MANY LEOs do not know the law.

As has been said SEARCH is your friend the entire statute is posted on this web site.

The law is 6" above stock height, and there is no headlight height laws, and while there is no tire size limit, the increased tire height does add into the 6" limit of overall height...i.e. a 4" lift and then going from 31" tires to 35" tires=4" lift height + 2" added overall height from tires=right at the 6" limit

This is correct, all you have to do is claim it as an multipurpose on/off road use vehicle. I used to daily drive my 01 Chevy with 8" of lift and 37s (so with 8" of lift and going from 30" stock tires to 37" was about 11.5" of total lift, probably closer to 12" since I cranked the front end up a bit), I never once had any problems with being pulled over for lift height, and no problem having the truck inspected, and nothing has ever been said while stopped at a license check, (Although I have never been pulled over for any other reason in that truck anyway I've learned alot since I was 16:rolleyes:) .

The only way I see it a problem is if you either 1. Drive like a maniac, 2. Your rig just looks "unsafe", or 3. The cop had a really bad day and decides to find something to pin on you (or you did something to piss him off and give him a reason).

There is a Z71 in Sanford I have seen a few times. I believe he is ridding on 46-53s Havent been close enough yet to see it. He might even be on here. IDK

There is a thread here covering general statues (SP?) which covers this and many others. It is worth a read. There doesnt seem to be any enforcement but NC is trying to get money so they might. I would think the biggest risk would be in an accident. If you go over a car full of children with 10 inches of lift youd probably get sued, arrested, etc.

If you are running 39"s and your are worried about getting pulled, I got a lot more to worry about with the 44s on my current DD. But I let alex borrow it so I dont have to worry about tickets this weekend:driver:

I think one of the biggest factors is not being an ass an drawing attention to yourself. I'm running 10" and 41's and never had a problem. The truck isn't loud and I don't drive like an ass. The only time I had any LEO's comment was just asking questions about how it rode and what equipment I had on it.
