I just got a 91 xj want a lift and tires to run Uwharrie and local trails. Money is a factor . How much lift do i need? and what brand works good for all around d/d and trails

How handy are you with a sawzall??? For a budget trail rig get a 3" lift and some 33's and cut away. You won't be able to conquer everything but you will be able to go most places and have alot of fun.

anywhere thy are cutting a new road in or powerlines or subdivison in .....to say where ever i"m at and it looks like fun i"m there!

This is illegal.
You are breaking the law. And you are a :poop:head.

nah, in all seriousness.
We do not support or condone trespassing or other illegal activities.

When you choose to trespass and destroy others properties you hurt our entire hobby.

im in kinda the same boat ure in. im debating on either lift it, or work with it stock.

skill is definately a factor, knowing ure limits, how to place wheels, etc...

i was looking at a 4wheeldrive mag one time, and it had an article about steps to modding ure stock rig.

to have a competent trail rig, a lift is not necessarily the way to go. sure u can fit bigger rubber and it looks better, but it also raises the center of gravity.

start with bigger tires. i believe the biggest a stock xj can fit is 235/75 series. try some bfg at's or swampers (depending on ure highway travel)

the next big mod are lockers. sure some people dont want drop 400-500 bucks on parts they cant even see, but the results are great.

add a winch/winch bumper. even the biggest rigs with the baddest tires get stuck and they mostly resort to a winch. its just about as good as trail insurance.

and with ure xj, def add some sway bar disco's...they'll raise the suspension felx travel to help u get over obstacles better. aftermarket shocks will not only give a better ride quality, but most are longer than stock. shocks are often a limiting factor in how much flex u have, so having them longer = more flex.

with all of these, u have an awesome base platform for a trail rig, u keep basically good mpg, and the center of gravity is low, making it a bit safer on the trail and road. and should u want to add a lift, or 33's...all u have to do is add them.

I dont have to know who you are, when you say anywhere they are cutting new roads, powerlines or subdivisions in...

You said it not me.

Forget it, this board has gone to absolute shit the last few weeks with Billy bobs bogging on the lines....

Here is my pice on lifting an XJ. I hae owned mine for 6 years now. I started with a 3" rough Country from JC whitney cause they were cheap and I justed wanted a small lift. I soon replaced their AAL with the full length from Rustys I got some used 31" Super Swampers and was good. Then the tires wore out and I wanted 33's so I trimmed a little and bought them. I bought some Rustys control arms used. Well they rubbed so I added spacers in the front a RC trac bar bracket and 1" blocks in the back. It flexed good but I couldn't disconnect or it would rub really bad. So out with the springs and spacers and in with 6" Rock Krawler Spings and 2" shackles, adjustable trac bar and bracket and a drop pitman arm. This worked well but I broke 2 of the control arms. So I knew I needed a long arm. After doing some research I got a small loan, bought a Dana 44 and ford 9", some DOM tubing, frame stiffners, and a bunch of other stuff. I am now sitting around 10" with TJ flares and 38's. I still need gears. SO my advice is to look at long term and Save for what you think you may want. ONLY do it ONCE and do it RIGHT. An offroad builder told me that when I did my 3" and now he is finally happy that I did it the right way but I wasted a lot of time and money. You can find my build on here some where. If not here I posted it on Pirate. If you want to see pics of Various stages PM me. Good luck with your build. I think 5" and 33's cut out and TJ flares are perfect for URE.

Wheeling is great as long as it is legal.

i had a 4.5 tuff country on my wife's 01 xj-it did pretty well for a budjet lift easily clearing 31 xterrains. i also know a guy who ran 35" mtrs w/ a 4" rusty lift and ALOT of cutting, in fact , he cut so much that when driving on wet roads, the rear compartment would get really wet. oh ...the 30f didn't like 35's either.
dude, we all love to wheel and have all probly been where we shouldn't have, but those days are gone. Please be careful what you do or say,the greenies are on us bad enuf now. good luck with the build.

depends on what kind of wheeling your going to do...and what size tire you plan on running?

As I have heard a million times, every XJ is different. I never did mine until I went to 6". I never had vibes either. Of course mine is a 93. I did have to change the Slip yoke when I put the 3" lift on as mine was making contact. I think I used a YJ Slip Yoke.

Just for your consideration we have a '97 sitting on a 3.5" Rusty's lift and running the Rubicon wheels/tires. Does well at URE and drives well.

We are upgrading to 4.5" and 33" tires this week. The 3.5 kit and tires/wheels are for sale. You are welcome to look at it before we dissasemble. It may work in your budget and give you an idea how it rides. If you like it we can make you a deal.
