Other than opening up the cover or doing a burnout, how do you determine if an axle has limited slip. Does the lift off the ground and rotate a wheel actually work?
I've got a 10 bolt still in a frame but no drive shaft and was wondering if i could jack up the axle and rotate one wheel, and if the other wheel rotates the same direction that means limited slip ? does that trick actually work?

I'm just too lazy to drain the diff and look, and then have to re seal it bc its just going under my house for a while

take and jack up the rear end by the pumpkin, with the tranny in drive (stickshift) or in park (auto). with both wheels cleared, take and turn one wheel. if the other spins in the other dirrection, you have an open diff. if you cant spin the wheel, you have a limited slip diff. the springs and clutches will not let the wheels turn against wach other. just make sure your driveshaft WILL NOT turn to find out.

ok, then jack up one wheel and see if you can turn the other, if not its limited slp

hmm....that will be the tough part....there is no drive shaft. How can I hold the yoke still?
You could always hold the pinion yolk, with a length of 1/2" pipe or conduit. 3' should do it, put the bearing straps back on to keep it there, while you check the opposite wheel rotation.
