anyone know how to limit the travel on a ram? right now its like ~8.5" stroke and it needs to be more like 6". can i just cut the shaft down and reweld a new eye? is there some way to limit it internally?

It would help to know what ram you are using. Shortening it may work, but remember it's a double action cylinder, so when it retracts, it will always be putting the cylinder strength(pressure) against the newly shortened side, For the hassles, I would go to Northern or tractor supply and get a 6" ram.

Just curious, but would re-positioning it help?

take it apart and put washers in the cylinder, or if you have a thread type clevis - just unthread it and stack washers on the rod.

Metty, what are ya doin PaL????
Why would you need a 6" stroke? Longer is better right.........:gay:

Mr. Nuts has the right answer for you ..................

but like chip said, wont that put pressure on the end of the ram when it retracts? its an 8" stroke forklift sideshift ram. and no, i cant mount it any other way, my tie rod only moves but so much. what about machining a spacer to put on the rod? i have acess to a mill and lathe

I saw a jeep that Tri-County Gear did with exactly that. They said it worked well. I think it was 4wd & sport utility magazine project jeep.
