Downloading ubuntu right now. Anyone on here have linux and what type?

I have been playing with Ubuntu for a few weeks. Running it about half the time on my laptop (dual boot). I can do pretty much everything I need with it, just have a few bugs to work out.

I've been using Unix in various flavors since 1983. Of the distros I've tried recently, Ubuntu seems to work for me.

I like linux/unix... my record for system up-time so far has been 915 days. :D That shutdown was due to extended power outage with one of the hurricanes...Fran I think. That system was a simple file server, nothing fancy.

Dang, thats alot of days. Yea, i'm new to linux. But i do have some basic experience in unix.

My record was on a basic db server running red hat. It served up MAC addresses and certificates for cable modems we were having built by a contract manufacturer. (At the time I worked for Ericsson) When we got sold to said contract mfg, they shipped it back up to us, cause we were going to build them, still in it's rack, just unplugged network and power. The UPS kept it up for the truck ride from Huntsville, Al to Lynchburg, Va.
It's uptime was from Oct 99 until Oct 2007 when I finally quit. (It was still running for amusement, but I have no way to see if it's still up. So I'm going with 3200 days.
:D

For desktop I like ubuntu recently. Pretty simple, just kind of works for most things. And has enough support base to get answers when needed.

For simplicity and a massive reduction in hours spent RTFM'ing... any of the Ubuntu distros (Kbuntu is my fav) will work fine. One of the desktop jockeys in my shop just pulled down the new Ubuntu "stoopid easy loader CD" & dropped it on a Dell M4300 (laptop) over Vista... dual booting in under 15 minutes start to finish! :D

We had an old SGI/Irix box that had been up for 7 years... until we found out $5k worth of hardware smoked it by 5000% crunching numbers...

My gentoo box has been up for about 560 days at this point... probably time for the PS to crap!

I use Ubuntu 7.10 gutsy on my laptop every day...love it! Can't wait for 8.whatever to be released from beta mode.

I also use Mythbuntu (MythTV under an Ubuntu OS) for my entertainment center. I only own 1 Windows PC, and thats b/c of Photoshop and COD4

^ i was also a big fan of Kubuntu, but I found Ubuntu to be a bit better for my laptop as it wasn't a workstation.

I made the mistake of "upgrading" to Gutsy on a couple of boxes. It broke a bunch of shit. I've gotta go back and reinstall Feisty, but haven't had the time.

Hardy has the same issues, FWIW.

Remote logins do not work in Gutsy or Heron. There are workarounds, but they're not 100%. I had probs with video card drivers, too, had to resort to standard drivers. Couple of other things I can't recall at the moment. The XDMCP failure was the killer, though. Lot of fucking good a remote box is if you can't log into it.

As far as I'm concerned, Feisty is the last stable release. Too many bugs in the later ones. If I have to manually edit config files to get things to run or launch apps from the command line, then it's not ready for distribution.

that's a security option right there.
it's hard for the hackers to PWN you if they can't login.

Isn't 8.whatever out now? Thought i saw it yesterday.

I have Ubuntu Gutsy installed on my laptop and a destop, in both cases it is the only operating system installed. I love it. Have been using it for almost a year now. I also recently uploaded the Kubuntu desktop which looks a little cooler.

Hardy is out in beta mode, you can troubleshoot it if you want, but if you are new to linux and programming I would stick with gutsy

KVM over IP is your buddy...

Eh... but this is a fawking built-in "feature" that doesn't work. Worse, it did work, but they broke it.

And people complain about MS... :flipoff2:
